Why did you choose Leeds University Business School?
I chose Leeds University Business School mainly because of my career interests in risk management in finance. This Business School offers a specialist Master’s degree in Financial Risk Management and that is what caught my attention. The Accounting and Finance Division is excellent.
Tell us about your course – why did you choose it? What elements of the course inspired you to choose the Business School/University?
In-depth study of financial risk management gave me exposure and insight into risk management, corporate finance, asset valuation and research.
What was the best part of your studies here – what did you enjoy the most?
The best part of my studies was the diverse culture. Meeting with people from different parts of the world, sharing ideas and views about the financial market across the globe.
What were your career aspirations when you arrived?
My career aspirations were to study hard, learn as much as possible, and apply skills to my future career in financial risk management. I was also very keen to network and meet as many new people as possible.
Do you have any noteworthy achievements from your study at the Business School that you can tell us about?
My research project was one of my major achievements during the year. I did not have a particularly research-heavy academic background, so I found at the beginning of my course that I did need to put in extra effort to develop these skills. I was proud to complete this project.
Were your career aspirations expanded by studying here? Did the skills and experience you acquired on your course give you the confidence to widen your career choices?
Yes, I learnt a lot about asset pricing, risk modelling and research which I now use professionally on a daily basis.
How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School? Have there been any notable highlights?
Yes, developing my career in financial risk management. In my current role as a Senior Analyst I continuously support client investment and financing decisions.
What did you learn/experience at the Business School that has helped you in your current role?
Studying risk valuation models, developing my communication and research skills.
What advice do you have for current students or alumni wishing to pursue a similar career?
Go the extra mile, learn as much as you can, enjoy the city of Leeds – and finally, believe in yourself!
What are your ambitions for the future?
- To become a structured product expert
- To become the CEO of an Investment Bank.
Do you think your experience and skills gained here will help you in your future career plans? In what way?
Yes, the experience and skills I gained at Leeds University Business School will definitely help me achieve my plans for the future. After completing a rigorous one year Master’s degree, and putting all my experiences and skills in practice, I believe the sky is my limit.
How do you think Leeds University Business School rates against other universities?
Leeds University Business School is one of the best universities in Europe and across the globe. I have really enjoyed spending a year in Leeds.
If you are not from the UK, how was the transition to a foreign country?
The transition was perfect, I didn't struggle with the language, and the people were very helpful.
What was your impression/experience of the facilities, the staff, your peers, the student union, the City of Leeds and the region itself?
The facilities are excellent, the staff were inspiring, and I learnt a lot from my peers too. I really enjoyed spending time at Leeds University Union and the city as a whole.
Were there any other positive aspects of your time at the Business School that are noteworthy?
Participating is class presentations - and, outside of the classroom, I loved having the chance to play football.
What would you say is your defining memory of studying here?
I loved the lectures, and learning. What I will take away is definitely more confidence in my abilities.
Graduation day: did this live up to your expectations? Were your family able to attend and did they enjoy the day?
Yes, my brother travelled to watch – we had a fantastic day and he was very proud.
Would you recommend the Business School to others?
Yes. Leeds is the top of my list of recommendations for anyone looking for an excellent Accounting and Finance Division in a Business School, and a fantastic city as well.
