About the programme

The Anderson Senior Leader programme is a 26-month master’s degree programme in Healthcare Leadership that helps middle to senior level leaders in health and social care develop leadership capability, improve confidence and increase resilience. It will equip leaders with the confidence to challenge the status quo and drive real and lasting change to improve the patient experience.

The programme is comprised of a 20-month senior leader apprenticeship, funded by the Apprenticeship Levy in England, followed by a 6-month MSc in Healthcare leadership. 

By the end of the programme, learners will:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of the patient experience and strengthening of existing leadership practice through cutting-edge theory and evidence
  • Work more strategically with greater collaboration across large and complex programmes, departments, services, and systems of care
  • Bring immediate positive and productive changes to teams, organisations, services, and patients in areas such as increasing staff morale, improving patient experience, effective service redesign and providing financial benefits
  • Improve personal impact to help drive progress in teams and inspire organisations to build a culture of inclusive, patient-centred care
  • Focus on becoming more resilient leaders, able to meet the demands of working in often high-pressured healthcare environments, improving patient outcomes and experiences

Who is it for?

The Senior Leader Apprenticeship Elizabeth Garrett Anderson is for middle to senior level leaders in health and social care who are: 
·    Aspiring to take on a more senior leadership role and looking to have a wider impact.
·    Committed to developing their leadership skills and behaviours and undertaking an academic qualification.
·    Motivated to apply new skills, learning and behaviours directly to real-time work related improvements.

How much does it cost?

The Anderson Senior Leadership Apprenticeship costs £14,000 and is fully funded through the government’s Apprenticeship Levy scheme.
The MSc in Healthcare leadership costs £3500 and is not covered by the Apprenticeship Levy scheme.

 

Programme overview

What is the programme structure?

·    20-month senior leadership apprenticeship programme

·    The senior leadership apprenticeship is assessed through a combination of critical and practical assignments, a strategic business proposal and professional discussion
·    A portfolio of evidence is compiled throughout the course to support the final assessment

·    Additional MSc block - The healthcare leadership case study 

The programme integrates your real-world experience with the practical application of leadership, while fostering both personal and professional growth. It guides you through the essential Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours needed to lead effectively and cultivate a culture of patient-centred care. Each unit focuses on key themes: leading self, leading teams, and leading organisations and systems, connecting these elements for a holistic leadership approach. The final units focus on preparing you for the End Point Assessment (EPA), ensuring you are fully equipped to succeed.

How to Apply

  1. Please complete the application form. This will be reviewed for eligibility and suitability.
  2. View the commitments, expectations, and entry requirements for this programme.
  3. You will be invited to upload various supporting documents to a secure portal.
  4. Once all the paperwork has been uploaded you will be invited to a formal telephone interview.
  5. A provisional ofer of a place will only be made after a successful interview.
  6. Your place on the programme will only be made available to you upon completion of the legal apprenticeship paperwork and procedures by your employer.

What is the cost?

  • The fees of £14,000 will be paid by your employer organisation through the UK Apprenticeship Levy Scheme, subject to eligibility and availability.
  • If you are employed by a large company which pays the UK apprenticeship levy the fees will be paid in full by the levy scheme, once your employer has registered with the Digital Apprenticeship Portal and completed and signed the formal written contract with the University of Leeds. Your place will only be made available to you upon completion of the formal procedures.
  • If you are employed by an SME, they can apply to reserve funding through the UK Apprenticeship levy scheme, but places are limited. The company will have to pay 5% of the cost of the fees. 95% of the fees will be paid in full by the levy scheme, once your employer has registered with the Digital Apprenticeship Portal and completed and signed the formal writte contract with the University of Leeds. Your place will only be made available to you upon completion of the formal procedures.

What are the entry requirements?

GCSE Maths and English at grade C (level 4) or above or equivalent qualification.  

Those without Maths and/or English GCSEs will be required to complete functional skills training ideally prior to starting the programme 

Meet one of the three degree and experience requirements: 

  1.  A 2:2 honours degree or above and a minimum of three years of management experience 
  2. degree or equivalent professional qualification, plus five years management experience. 
  3. No degree, but five years’ management experience, with strong and consistent career progression and achievement. A non-standard entry is available to support those learners without a degree.

Accreditation – Level 7 Executive Leadership Apprenticeship, Chartered status with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)


Intake – Two cohorts per year (September and January) 

Application deadlines – Applications for each cohort are due at least 6 weeks before the start date. However, spaces are on a first-come, first-serve basis, so it is encouraged to apply early to guarantee your space

Location – University of Leeds campus / online

Duration – 24 months total (20 months taught and 4 months End Point Assessment) Then 6 months MSc in Healthcare leadership

Delivery – Face-to-face workshops, group learning, reflective discussion, presentations, online tutorials one-to-one coaching, self-guided study

Kristen is the Relationship Manager for Executive Education at Leeds University Business School. Originally from the Washington DC area, Kristen has spent the last eight years working in universities across the United States. Kristen manages the recruitment to our Executive Leadership Apprenticeship and works closely with businesses to advise them, and their employees, on how they can get the most value out of the apprenticeship programme.

Andrew Lewis

Andrew Lewis is the apprenticeship programme director for the Leeds Executive Leadership Level 7 Apprenticeship. He is an associate professor and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  Andrew Lewis is passionate about executive education and has over ten years of experience in leading and developing executive education and apprenticeship programmes for businesses in the UK, and twelve years of industry experience both in the UK with Tesco and Internationally with Hilton Hotels.
