The Chinese Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Liu Xiaoming, has been received at the University of Leeds where he paid a visit to the Business Confucius Institute, accompanied by Mr Li Yongsheng (Consul General, Manchester Consulate) and Mr Wang Yongli (Minister-Counsellor for Education at the Chinese Embassy in London).
Ambassador Liu met with staff and partners of the Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds (BCIUL). He was particularly keen to talk to our students about their experiences of studying Mandarin and Chinese culture. East Asia Studies graduate Tania Yeromiyan was congratulated on her success in the 2015 Chinese Bridge Competition. Trevor Lake and James Turner, both executive business clients, were also greeted by the Ambassador. It was a pleasure to be able to give our students this opportunity, and to show Ambassador Liu the range of Chinese teaching activities we engage in.
Dr. Hinrich Voss, BCIUL Director, introduced the Institute’s work and received strong encouragement from the Ambassador, who emphasised the important contribution of Confucius Institutes to China-UK relations.
It was a great honour to receive Ambassador Liu Xiaoming, and his endorsement further strengthens our conviction that our work in the areas of language, culture, and business make a key contribution to international relations and cross-cultural understanding. We are delighted to work with the strong support of both the Business School and the University of Leeds as a whole to achieve these goals.
