The Destruction of Long Term Finance

Ashok Gupta has spent his career in those areas of finance best able to provide long-term capital to invest in the building of businesses and infrastructure, namely pensions, insurance and investment; initially as a consultant, then as an executive and more latterly as an entrepreneur. Throughout this period he's witnessed both a decline in investment horizons and a replacement of investment activity by trading activity.

Drawing on his recent work with the Bank of England on institutional investment and his current work leading an industry review of the Defined Benefits pensions sector, he'll describe how financial systems have become corrupted, in part by modern financial theories and approaches to managing risk, undermining their ability to fulfil their original purpose. Ashok will also propose potential solutions.

About the Defined Benefit Taskforce

The DB Taskforce  was set up by the PLSA in March  2016 to  undertake a review of the challenges currently facing funded defined benefit (DB) pension schemes, and make recommendations to Government which will (a) help ensure the sustainability of open DB schemes and (b) help closed DB schemes run off more efficiently and ultimately secure member benefits.
