Winner in the International Competition for best Ph.D. Thesis in International Business, awarded by the Academy of International Business, October 1985.

Experience

09/86-12/95 New Blood Lecturer in Business Economics, School of Management, University of Bath, and subsequently Jean Monnet Lecturer in European Integration and International Business, in the Centre for International Business Research, within the same school.

01/96 Senior Lecturer in International Business, Centre for International Business, School of Business and Economic Studies, University of Leeds. Previous appointments have been at the University of Reading, University College Swansea, and the University of Exeter.

Awarded a Jean Monnet Chair in European Integration and International Business in April 1995, while at the University of Bath, by the Jean Monnet Project of the European Commission. Re-awarded a Jean Monnet Chair at the University of Leeds to enable specialisation in the research and teaching of international business in the context of European Integration. Subsequently Jean Monnet Senior Lecturer in European Integration and International Business Management (from 1997) at the University of Leeds. He is currently Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration and International Business Management (since 2003).

Research

The determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) into the European Union, particularly the relationship between market integration and FDI by US and Japanese multinational firms. Intra European Union multinational activity, FDI and trade flows in the context of European market integration.The mutual cultural perceptions of managers within mergers and acquisitions between German and Polish and UK firms. Investigation of the impact of FDI by European and foreign-owned firms on knowledge transfer and radical organisational change in liberalising markets, especially in Hungary and the People's Republic of China. The impact of European and foreign-owned firms on the productivity and performance of Chinese firms. The internationalisation of services, particularly telecommunications services. The market entry modes of multinational banks in eastern and central Europe.
