Profile
Ali’s research is founded upon applying analytics and advanced methodologies to the study of management, governance and performance of professional organisations and public services. With two primary areas of expertise – corporate governance and behavioural finance – his current research interest is mainly directed toward the interface of behavioural sciences and business studies, sitting at the intersection of finance, management, governance, and psychology.
Ali is also highly regarded for his expertise in the performance analysis of public sector organisations. His innovative research on governance and the performance of public organisations is driven by quantitative research that enables him to investigate the antecedents and consequences of governance and managerial structures in the public sector. His research generated wide media coverage from the likes of the Financial Times, The Economist, The Times, and The Guardian, among others, and was also covered in numerous healthcare professional publications.
He received this PhD (Finance) from Leeds University Business School, his MBA from Durham University and his BSc from Istanbul Technical University.

Activities
Ali is our Director of Postgraduate (Taught) Studies in the Accounting and Finance department and Programme Co-director for MSc Law and Finance. He is a member of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Finance and the Athena-Swan Faculty Self-Assessment Team (SAT). His teaching currently covers modules related to Advanced Finance, Financial Modelling, Econometrics and Behavioural Finance. His teaching in the past also covered Applied Finance, Research Methods, Consumer and Corporate Credit and Insurance subjects.
Awards and honours
Ali has won the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence twice, in 2013 and 2016. He also won the Best Paper Award at the 11th OBHC Conference (Montreal, Canada) in 2018, the Highly Commended Paper Award at the 13th OBHC Conference (Birmingham, UK) in 2022, and the Best Paper Award at the 4th CINSC/2025 INFINITI Conference (Edinburgh, UK) in 2025.
