Studying Economics at Leeds University Business School

Welcome from the Programme Director

Peter Hughes

Hello, I'm Dr Peter Hughes and I am the Programme Director for BSc Economics.

The BSc Economics will provide you with an excellent foundation for your future career. This degree will provide you with the ability to analyse economic and business developments and to organise, interpret and present data. These are important skills that employers often demand of graduates and this is reflected in the high employment rates of Economics graduates from the University of Leeds. They are also skills that are particularly suited to a career in the financial services sector, where over half of our 2016 graduates found employment (according to the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey).

A degree in Economics also allows you to keep your career options open. Our graduates often choose to undertake further study after their undergraduate degree, deepening their understanding of economics or specialising in the study of finance or business at postgraduate level.

The Economics degree at Leeds will help you develop the skills to understand how markets work, how businesses develop competitive strategies and the factors that drive changes in economic growth, inflation and trade. You will study the core principles of economic, mathematical and statistical analysis with a choice of optional modules in each year of study.

There is support from your personal tutor and from the Business School to develop your employability and many of our students are successful in securing work placements or summer internships, in finance, consulting or governmental organisations.

BSc Economics

Develop a deep understanding of the factors that influence income, wealth and well being, how scarce resources are allocated, distributed and utilised today and how they may change in the future.

Covering the core concepts, practices and techniques of economics, this course also allows you to develop the analytical, quantitative, computing, presentation and other transferable skills required by professional economists and employers in both the private and public sectors.

You’ll gain in-depth knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics and build your mathematical skills. A wide range of optional modules give you the chance to explore specialist areas such as business economics, monetary policy, international trade or health or transport economics.

Taught by active researchers in Leeds University Business School, home of the Applied Institute of Research in Economics, you’ll explore different and unconventional approaches to economics with access to the latest developments in the field.
