Joshua Norman

Joshua Norman graduated from Leeds University Business School in 2024 with a BSc in Banking and Finance (Industrial). He is now an Associate Business Manager to the Managing Director of Commercial Banking Coverage at Lloyds Banking Group, following four rotations on the bank’s graduate scheme across SME Banking, Credit Risk, Merchant Services and Strategy.

During his time at Leeds, Joshua completed a placement year with RSM’s Financial Due Diligence team and developed practical financial analysis skills through his course. Since graduating, he has applied those skills to support credit approvals, helping businesses access funding to invest and grow.

Why did you choose to study Banking and Finance at Leeds?

I chose to study Banking and Finance because I had always been interested in the banking industry and wanted a degree that went beyond general business studies. Leeds was one of the few in the UK offering a dedicated Banking and Finance course, which really appealed to me as it provided a much deeper insight into how the industry works.

One of the things I enjoyed most was the variety of modules and the flexibility to tailor the course to my interests. It gave me the chance to use Bloomberg Trading Terminals, analyse real-world financial data and develop a practical understanding of the industry alongside the academic theory.

One of the things that attracted me to the course was the opportunity to become a member of the Chartered Banker Institute. As someone who was already interested in a career in banking, it felt like a great way to gain additional exposure to the industry and start building a professional foundation alongside my studies.

What were the highlights of your course?

One of the highlights of my course was the lecturers. They were incredibly supportive and brought the subject to life by drawing on their own experiences from the banking and finance industry. I found their insights particularly valuable, as they linked what we were learning in lectures to real-world events and challenges, which made the content feel relevant and engaging.

A particular highlight of the course was participating in a two-day F2F Investment Banking Workshop. It provided a fascinating insight into a different side of the financial services industry, challenged me to apply what I had learned in a practical setting and gave me a better understanding of the wide range of career opportunities available within banking and finance.

What did you enjoy most about student life at Leeds?

I absolutely loved my time at the University of Leeds, and a big part of that was the city itself. Leeds has such a great atmosphere; it is a large city with plenty going on, but it always felt welcoming and easy to navigate. Having the campus, city centre and student accommodation all so close together created a real sense of community.

Outside of my studies, I was heavily involved with the Taekwondo Society, serving as both Social Secretary and Treasurer. This was one of the most rewarding parts of my university experience, as it allowed me to give back to a club that I enjoyed being part of while developing valuable skills in leadership, organisation and teamwork.

The Leeds University Business School Ball was also a highlight every year, providing a great opportunity to celebrate with friends and connect with fellow students from across the Business School.

How did Leeds help you develop professionally?

I developed a range of professional skills during my time at Leeds University Business School, particularly in financial analysis, problem-solving, communication and teamwork. Through a combination of individual assignments, group projects and presentations, I learned how to analyse complex information, communicate my findings clearly and work effectively with others.

The practical elements of the course, including the use of Bloomberg Trading Terminals and the financial analysis project, helped me apply academic concepts to real-world situations and develop the commercial awareness that has been invaluable in my career.

The Careers Centre was also an excellent resource, providing support with CVs, interviews and networking opportunities, as well as helping me explore different career paths within the banking and finance industry.

How did your time at Leeds prepare you for your career?

My time at Leeds gave me a strong foundation in financial analysis, which continues to be valuable in my role within Commercial Banking today. The course developed my ability to analyse financial statements, assess business performance and draw meaningful conclusions from complex information. These skills are regularly used when supporting client conversations and preparing credit papers, where understanding a business’s financial position is essential.

One of the most influential parts of my university experience was completing a placement year with RSM’s Financial Due Diligence team. The placement gave me first-hand exposure to the finance industry and helped me better understand the different career paths available. It allowed me to apply what I had learned in a professional environment, build my confidence and develop valuable commercial skills. Most importantly, it helped shape my career aspirations and confirmed that working closely with businesses and supporting their growth was the aspect of the industry that appealed to me most.

How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School?

Since graduating from Leeds University Business School, I have completed four rotations on Lloyds Banking Group’s graduate scheme across SME Banking, Credit Risk, Merchant Services and Strategy. Along the way, I have had the opportunity to present to senior leaders, support strategic projects and work with clients across a range of sectors.

A particular highlight has been applying the financial analysis skills I developed at Leeds to support the preparation of nearly £5 million of credit approvals, helping businesses access funding to invest and grow.

Outside of my core roles, I have been fortunate to get involved in several opportunities that have accelerated my development. I was selected for the bank’s sponsorship programme, returned to Leeds to speak with first and second-year students about careers in banking, and helped organise and host graduate welcome events, with the CEO attending.

I have also organised a Women in Leadership lunch featuring senior C-suite professionals and, more recently, have been supporting the Managing Director of Commercial Banking Coverage in my final placement. I have also gained a Global Credit Certificate Level 1 and 2, furthering my professional studies.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambition is to have my own portfolio of clients and become a trusted relationship manager, supporting businesses to achieve their growth ambitions. I enjoy working closely with clients, understanding their challenges and identifying opportunities where I can add value, so developing long-term client relationships is something I am particularly excited about for the future.

In the longer term, I would like to progress into a leadership role where I can help shape strategy, support colleagues to develop and contribute to the continued growth of the bank. I am keen to continue learning, broadening my experience and taking on new challenges that will help me make a meaningful contribution to the banking industry.

Would you recommend Leeds University Business School?

Yes, absolutely. I'd highly recommend both the University of Leeds and Leeds University Business School. The combination of the academic programme, excellent facilities, strong industry links and a vibrant student community made it a fantastic place to study. Beyond the degree itself, Leeds is an incredible city to live in.

My advice to students would be to get involved in societies, attend careers events, explore placement opportunities and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Work hard and make the most of the excellent academic support and facilities but also take time to enjoy the experience.
