Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it?

I first heard about the MSc course through a friend I played hockey with during my undergraduate studies at Leeds, who was completing the programme at the time. After hearing about the modules and approach to learning, it immediately appealed to me as it aligned with my interest in understanding how organisations develop strategy and drive innovation.

I was attracted to the balance between academic theory and practical application, providing the opportunity to explore strategic concepts while applying them to business challenges.

What did you enjoy the most about your course?

What I enjoyed most about the course was the combination of the people, teaching, and opportunity to apply my learning in practice. The diverse backgrounds and experiences of my fellow students created a rich learning environment. Many of the friendships I developed during the course have continued well beyond graduation.

I also valued the support and expertise of the teaching team, who had a real ability to simplify complex concepts. Their guidance and networks were instrumental throughout the programme.

Finally, the dissertation process was a highlight, providing the opportunity to bring together everything I had learned and apply it to independent research. The experience helped me build valuable industry connections, which ultimately supported my transition into my first role after graduating.

What did you enjoy most about your life as a student at the University of Leeds?

Having already completed my BA in History at Leeds, I was fortunate to continue my studies in a city and university environment I already valued. One of the highlights of student life was being able to continue playing hockey throughout my time at Leeds, combining the enjoyment of competitive sport with the strong social connections that came with being part of a team.

I also enjoyed being actively involved in university societies, first through History and later through Leeds University Business School, which provided opportunities to meet new people, build friendships, and take part in memorable social experiences.

What surprised me most, however, was the strength of the relationships I developed during my MSc. The connections I made with fellow students and teaching staff have continued long after graduation.

How did your time at Leeds prepare you for the future?

Leeds helped prepare me for my future career by developing my ability to operate effectively in different environments and adapt to uncertainty. The course required me to take ownership of my own learning, work independently, and collaborate closely with others through group projects and discussions.

This ability to balance autonomy with teamwork has been particularly valuable throughout my career. I began working during the COVID-19 pandemic, where remote collaboration and self-motivation were essential, and I now work in a global role that combines remote working with in-person collaboration and international travel. The experience gained at Leeds gave me the confidence to adapt to different ways of working.

How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School?

My career progression was significantly influenced by the opportunities that came from my MSc dissertation and the industry connections I developed through my research. These relationships helped open the door to my first role and provided the foundation for my career journey.

Since then, I have continued to build on the skills and knowledge developed during my time at Leeds University Business School, working across innovation and change initiatives. My experience has spanned both physical product and brand innovation, where I focused on bringing new concepts to market, through to my current role as a Digital Product Owner, where I lead the development and adoption of tools and technology solutions.

What was your biggest highlight of studying at Leeds?

My biggest highlight from my time at Leeds University Business School was being invited to attend the Switzerland trip after achieving one of the top results on my course. I was selected alongside high-performing students from other business master’s programmes, which made it a particularly rewarding experience.

The trip provided a fantastic opportunity to gain exposure to different industries through company visits and learn from real business environments. Equally memorable were the friendships developed throughout the experience, with plenty of enjoyable moments, conversations, and shared experiences along the way.

Would you recommend Leeds University Business School?

I would highly recommend Leeds University Business School, particularly the MSc Global Strategy and Innovation Management. The quality of teaching, range of opportunities, and people you meet make it a truly valuable experience.

My advice to students would be to fully embrace every opportunity that comes your way, as you never know what doors it may open in the future. These connections not only enhance your learning but also make the overall university experience far more enjoyable and memorable. And, if I can add a slightly less academic piece of advice, make sure you enjoy the occasional Friday night at Fruity in the Union too!
