Abantika Chatterjee

Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it? 

I spent several years building my career in technology, specialising in AI and machine learning product management at Deloitte USI. I enjoyed solving business problems through technology, but over time I realised that creating impact required more than technical expertise. I wanted to strengthen my strategic thinking, business acumen and leadership skills so I could influence organisational decisions. I chose the Leeds MBA because of its strong reputation.  Moving from India to the UK also meant stepping into a completely new environment. I wanted more than an internationally recognised MBA. I wanted an experience that would help me grow as a person. 

What did you enjoy most about your life as a student at the University of Leeds? 

Some of my most memorable experiences came from learning outside the classroom. I had the opportunity to travel to France to participate in a Design Thinking programme at Audencia Business School, which enhanced my perspective on innovation, creativity and problem solving. I also represented Leeds in the Oxford Global Case Competition, an experience that challenged me to work under pressure. 

How did you find adjusting to living and studying in the UK? 

Moving from India without an established support network meant adapting to a new culture and education system. There were moments of uncertainty, but they quickly became opportunities for growth. What made the transition easier was the incredible support from the University of Leeds. The professors, services staff and careers team were always approachable and genuinely invested in helping students succeed. Just as importantly, my MBA cohort became my first community in the UK.  

What professional skills and experience did you gain? 

Before joining Leeds, I had completed a B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering and spent seven years building my career in technology in India, specialising in AI and machine learning. Through my roles at Deloitte USI, I developed strong technical expertise and experience in delivering technology solutions, but I recognised that to lead transformation, I needed to strengthen my business understanding and leadership capabilities. The Leeds MBA helped me bridge that gap.  

How did your time at Leeds prepare you for the future? 

One of the most valuable lessons from Leeds was learning to embrace different perspectives. Moving from India to the UK, building a professional network from scratch and collaborating with classmates from different industries and cultures taught me resilience and adaptability.  The confidence and skills I developed at Leeds played an important role in my career journey after graduation, from transitioning into a Technical Product Owner role at Dyson to becoming one of the youngest Associate Directors at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, where I currently lead the AI Centre of Excellence and AI Capability. 

How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School? 

My career has progressed in ways I could only have imagined when I began my MBA journey. The programme gave me the confidence and skills to transition from a technology specialist into a business and product leader.  In 2025, I joined the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development as an Associate Director, becoming one of the youngest professionals to be appointed at this level within the Bank. In my current role, I lead the AI Centre of Excellence and AI Capability, helping shape the Bank's AI strategy and delivering responsible AI solutions that improve ways of working and support EBRD's mission of promoting sustainable development. 

What was your biggest highlight of studying at Leeds? 

When I arrived in Leeds from India, I was stepping into a new country without an established network. By the time I graduated, I had built lifelong friendships, developed relationships with inspiring mentors and become part of a community that supported and encouraged me throughout my journey. That was the biggest highlight. 

Would you recommend Leeds University Business School? 

Without hesitation. The University and Business School became my first community in the UK, giving me the support, confidence and global perspective that have shaped my journey ever since. Choosing Leeds was one of the best decisions I have made.
