I chose to attend Leeds University Business School (LUBS) owing to its tradition of academic excellence, the high-impact structure of the degree and its strong ties to industry. The fact that it provides a globally recognised degree, delivered by world-class lecturers with experience in industry and research, was a key driver of my decision. The global exposure and network here allows for fascinating insights into different cultures and regions, which are crucial in today’s international business climate. Cutting-edge insights from incumbent industry experts and business leaders strengthen one’s understanding of the dynamic business landscape. Its accreditations, Russell Group status and top ranking, particularly for marketing, were also key factors influencing my decision to study here.
My degree programme, Management with Marketing, delves into cornerstone aspects of marketing and allied functions, particularly in today’s evolving marketing environment. The core modules, ranging from Strategic Management to International Marketing, develop practical skills and expertise. I also had the flexibility and resources to pursue subjects as varied as Italian, Psychology and even Management Consulting to assist my personal development.
The Business School provides extensive, specialised resources to boost your employability and support your development. The Business School's Careers and Employability service has a fantastic track record and several successful students have completed a Year in Industry or Study Abroad Year by leveraging inputs and support from career consultants, careers fairs and workshops run directly by firms. This is one of the Business School's best features in my view and those interested will benefit hugely from the emphasis placed on employability. In Year 3, I completed a Year in Industry at GE Healthcare as a Global Product Marketing Intern, focusing on Contrast Media. I was engaged in several key projects, providing support to marketing managers on campaigns involving global brands and teams, including a major product launch. During my tenure, I delivered business-critical digital content for a global product launch to challenging deadlines. I conducted vital quantitative analyses reviewing extensive data and scientific sources; I presented key insights that helped to decode product revenues in key regions and quantify trends in diagnostic modalities. I also drove and launched the first-ever webpages for Contrast Media outside the USA.
During the year, I was enrolled on the Year in Industry module that required frequent reflection on my development and inputs from questionnaires sent to my managers. I met with my placement tutor face-to-face when she visited my office, and she was a source of support throughout the year. I would strongly encourage students to consider a Year in Industry for 3 reasons: it accelerates the development of one’s business judgement and temperament; it provides numerous opportunities to demonstrate key skills sought by graduate employers; and it condenses the learning curve when solving tough business challenges in the future.
The University has an Award-winning Students' Union, with eye-opening extracurricular avenues to continue with old hobbies, acquire new ones or contribute to the local and national community through volunteering and social-impact projects. During my time, I have been involved with the Leeds University Union Men’s Cricket Club, AIESEC and the Business School society, and have volunteered with organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Support to drive change locally.
The Business School has shaped my development as an innovative and critical thinker and equipped me with the relevant skills, knowledge and opportunities to grow as a business leader. It provides a global lens through which to view business across industries and geographies. The network of peers and Teaching Fellows from around the world contribute to an inspiring and collaborative learning environment and a diverse alumni network – qualities that are sure to reflect in the global nature and holistic strength of your degree, student experience and career.
