Why did you choose to study at Leeds University Business School?

I loved the city, and the business school seemed ahead of the other Russell group universities I had looked at. Leeds was the last university I had looked at, and every other had discussed using a certain text; at Leeds, the lecturer in front of me was the one who had wrote the text.

Tell us about your course – why did you choose it?

I’m studying BA Management. I took business at GCSE and A-Level, and the content always seemed straight forward and simple, and I enjoyed it. It’s a broad course, and caters to a variety of career paths.

What would you say to anyone considering applying for a scholarship?

When I applied to my scholarship, I didn’t expect to actually get it. I read that hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of scholarships go unclaimed, so thought I had nothing to lose, and you have nothing to lose. I meet a lot of people who didn’t even know about the opportunity and they kick themselves for not applying.

What sort of things did you include in your scholarship supporting statement?

I mainly stuck to the questions I was asked. I talked about how my work experience, my enterprising schemes as a child and my studies had bought me to studying Management. I talked about academic success, but more importantly academic improvement where I had previously recognised failures. I was direct, and said what I can bring to the business school and why I deserve the scholarship. I tried to show my personality by talking about what I get up to outside of college, even if it isn’t academic or relevant to management.

What are the best things about your studies here – what are you enjoying the most?

I enjoy learning independently, and feel a greater sense of achievement from researching and gaining an understanding of things for myself. I have quickly learnt a variety of academic skills, and my writing and the way in which I address employers and professionals has vastly improved.

Have you been involved in any extra-curricular activities at Leeds such as clubs and societies or being a student ambassador?

I am main sports I am involved in are rugby and boxing. I am a part of the Leeds Amateur Boxing Society, and train weekly with them. I chose not to play for the university rugby team, but have instead joined a local men’s club, which I thoroughly enjoy.I was also elected to be the president of my halls, The Tannery. I co-ordinate an exec team in planning events, making environmental improvements and engaging students in sport. This also involves budgeting and financial responsibilities which have been relevant to the course.

Would you recommend the Business School to others who are considering studying here?

100%.
