Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it?
One of the main reasons I chose the MSc International Business programme at the University of Leeds was my interest in business and global markets. Coming from a business family, I was always curious about how companies grow, compete internationally, and build successful operations across different countries. This interest motivated me to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration, which gave me a strong foundation in management and business principles. However, I wanted to take my knowledge further by understanding business from a truly international perspective.
A close relative who completed his MBA from Leeds University Business School in the early 1990s highly recommended the University, sharing how its academic excellence and practical approach had prepared him for a successful career. His experience inspired me to choose Leeds.
What did you enjoy the most about your course?
Rather than simply learning concepts from textbooks, we were encouraged to solve real business challenges through case studies, business simulations, group projects, and class discussions. One of the highlights for me was the business simulation exercise, where we worked in teams to create and manage our own company. It was an excellent way to experience strategic decision-making, competition, and teamwork in a practical setting.
The academic staff were another standout feature of the programme. They were highly knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely invested in our learning. They always made time to answer questions, explain complex topics using real business examples, and encourage us to think critically rather than accept ideas at face value. Their mentorship helped me build confidence in analysing business problems and making strategic decisions.
The University also regularly organised networking and career events with leading organisations such as Deloitte, KPMG, EY, and Marks & Spencer, giving us valuable opportunities to interact with industry professionals, understand current market trends, and build meaningful professional connections.
How did you find adjusting to living and studying in the UK?
Moving to the UK in September 2019 was both exciting and challenging. Like many international students, it took me a little time to adjust to the weather, food, and a completely new way of life. The first couple of months were a learning experience, but the transition became much smoother thanks to the incredible support provided by the University of Leeds.
The Students Union and university support teams were extremely helpful from day one. They guided us through essential formalities such as collecting our BRP, obtaining our student ID cards, opening UK bank accounts, setting up university systems and apps, and even providing free SIM cards. These small but thoughtful initiatives made settling into a new country much less stressful. We also benefited from a wide range of student discounts on food, clothing, public transport, and many other everyday essentials, which made student life more affordable.
How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School?
I started my career as a Business Development Associate in the polymer industry, where I was responsible for developing new customers and expanding business across new territories. During this time, I had the opportunity to work closely with global companies such as ExxonMobil, supporting market development initiatives and helping introduce their products to new customers. Today, I work as an Account Manager at Stavian Chemical, a Fortune Global 500 company and one of the world's leading polymer distributors. I am responsible for sales and market development across India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, managing a diverse portfolio of polymer products while working with international teams and suppliers across Asia and the Middle East.
What are your ambitions for the future?
My long-term ambition is to lead a globally respected polymer or petrochemical company or eventually establish one of my own. I aspire to build an organisation that is recognised not only for its commercial success but also for its integrity, innovation, and customer trust. My vision is to create a company that becomes one of the most trusted and reliable names in the global polymer industry by consistently delivering quality, fostering long-term partnerships, and creating value for every stakeholder.
Beyond business success, I am passionate about making a meaningful contribution to society. I hope to create employment opportunities, encourage innovation, and support the growth of India's manufacturing and chemical industries. I strongly believe that successful businesses should do more than generate profits; they should also empower people, nurture talent, promote sustainable growth, and make a positive impact on customers, employees, and the communities they serve.
Would you recommend Leeds University Business School?
Absolutely, I would highly recommend the University of Leeds to prospective students. In fact, I actively do so in my role as a Global Alumni Ambassador in India. Through this role, I have had the opportunity to guide and mentor many students who were deciding where to pursue their higher education, and I have proudly shared my own experience at Leeds to help them make an informed choice.
I have also participated in several University of Leeds alumni and student engagement events in Delhi, where I interacted with prospective students and their families, answered their questions, and shared insights into student life, academic experience, and career opportunities at Leeds.
