Why did you choose to study Business Management with Human Resources?

I chose to study this degree because I loved how diverse the modules were. What really stood out to me was the human side of business. I particularly enjoyed modules exploring topics such as the history of work, leadership, organisational behaviour and personality. They helped me understand not just how organisations function, but why people behave the way they do within them.

Employment law quickly became one of my favourite modules, despite it not being something I had initially considered. It challenged me in new ways and ultimately inspired the career path I am on today.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

Studying at Leeds University Business School was an incredibly rewarding experience. One of the things I appreciated most was how passionate and inspiring the lecturers were. Their enthusiasm for their subjects was infectious, and they encouraged us to ask questions and develop our own perspectives.

The Business School itself is an amazing place to study. One of the most valuable parts of my course was the people I met and the diversity within the Business School meant I had the opportunity to work alongside students from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and experiences.

What did you enjoy most about your life as a student at the University of Leeds?

Joining societies was one of the best decisions I made at university. I got involved with the Meditation Society, LGBTQ+ Society and Plant Society, and each one helped me grow in different ways.

Although I had lived in Leeds before starting University, joining the LGBTQ+ Society helped me experience the city in a completely new way. It introduced me to the vibrant queer community and welcoming spaces that I had not known before. Through socials, events and the friendships I made, I found places where I felt genuinely accepted, celebrated and able to be myself.

I found friendships, belonging and opportunities that have shaped who I am both during and beyond my degree.

What professional skills and experience did you gain during your time at Leeds University Business School?

Through presentations, group projects and independent research, I built confidence in my communication, teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Outside the classroom, getting involved in societies and ambassador opportunities helped me grow even further. These experiences strengthened my leadership, organisation and networking skills while giving me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone and connect with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

The Business School also provided fantastic careers and employability support through careers fairs, employer events, networking opportunities and guidance from the Careers Service. These experiences gave me valuable insight into different career paths and helped me prepare for graduate applications.

How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School?

Since graduating from Leeds University Business School, I have progressed into a career in Human Resources, where I have been able to directly apply the skills and interests, I developed during my degree.

My time at Leeds, particularly studying employment law and modules focused on people and organisations, played a key role in shaping my decision to pursue HR and gave me a strong foundation to build from.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my career so far has been seeing how my university learning translates into real-world impact. Skills such as communication, critical thinking and stakeholder management have been essential in my role, particularly when supporting employees and contributing to positive workplace culture.

I have also really valued opportunities to stay connected with Leeds, including speaking at events such as the Leeds HR Society, which has allowed me to reflect on my journey and engage with current students who are exploring similar career paths.

What are your ambitions for the future?

In the future, I want to continue developing my career within Human Resources. I really value the role I am in now and the opportunity it gives me to work closely with people and contribute to positive workplace experiences, so my immediate ambition is to keep learning, gaining experience and progressing within HR.

Would you recommend Leeds University Business School?

I would absolutely recommend Leeds University Business School to others. My experience there gave me far more than just academic knowledge. It provided an environment where I was encouraged to challenge myself, build confidence and discover opportunities I had not initially considered.

One of the things that stands out most about Leeds is how much is on offer beyond the degree itself. There are so many ways to get involved, whether that is through societies, volunteering or employability opportunities, and I think that is where a lot of personal growth really happens.

My advice to students would be to say yes to things early on, even if they feel unfamiliar at first. Some of my most valuable experiences came from stepping into spaces I had not planned for, and they ended up shaping both my confidence and my future direction.
