How was the transition to a foreign country? Did the university offer support or services that you found helpful? Can you offer any advice?
As an international student coming to the UK from India, there was definitely an adjustment period. The University of Leeds and the Business School provided excellent support that helped my transition.
Some advice I would offer to international students studying in the UK would be:
- Attend international student orientation events - Leeds organised informational sessions that covered visas, healthcare, employment, culture and more, which helped demystify the process.
- Join university global or cultural groups - I connected with an Indian student association that became a great social network.
- Learn logistics like transportation, banking and housing - Leeds had workshops and resources to help figure out essentials like getting a bank account, finding housing and navigating the city.
- Embrace opportunities to experience UK life - I went to local events and tried new things outside my comfort zone. I’d recommend immersing yourself in life in the UK as it helps you to adapt quicker to life in a different country.
- Get support if homesick - reach out to counselors or groups on campus. The adjustment can take time, so ensure that you are patient with yourself.
- Ensure you build a diverse support network - having local and international friends provides different perspectives.
Have an open mind – push yourself to adapt and experience all the UK has to offer. The university provides resources, but you drive the acclimation process. It may be challenging at first, but your personal growth will be immense.
What was your impression/experience of the facilities, the staff, your peers, the student union, the City of Leeds and the region itself? What would you recommend to future students?
I had an extremely positive impression of the school, staff, students, and overall environment at Leeds and in the region. Teaching rooms full of technology enriched our learning experience, staff were always supportive and happy to help whenever they could, connecting with students from across the globe allowed me to learn diverse perspectives and make lifelong friendships and Leeds University Union provided a central hub for activities which helped to build a university community. The city of Leeds provided a great student experience, with lots of activities and events throughout the year, lots of things to see and visit and a rich history and culture. Yorkshire is a great county to explore historic sites and explore the natural beauty of the landscape too.
I’d recommend taking advantage of the people, places, and opportunities. Embrace it all with an open mindset. The facilities and support provide everything you need to focus on personal and professional growth and have a brilliant student experience. It is when you make those long lasting connections that it leads to lifelong impact.
What would you say is your defining memory of studying here? And would you recommend the Business School to others?
The personal growth and global perspective I gained. These include:
- The close friendships forged with classmates from around the world truly expanded my global perspective. I learned so much from their diverse viewpoints.
