A world first for current student Safiyyah

Final year student, Safiyyah Hafiji (Management with Marketing), has set up the world’s first record label focussed exclusively on A Cappella nasheeds and other vocals-only faith music.

Her inspiration grew out of her passion for A Cappella faith-based music and her determination to break down barriers and make it more accessible to all. Safiyyah was the successful recipient of an Enterprise Scholarship, and was one of just four students in her year group selected to complete a Year in Enterprise, allowing her access to the University’s dedicated business start-up service, SPARK. Safiyyah used the support of SPARK to establish her label and become the first Muslim woman to work in the Islamic music Industry.

Safiyyah appeared on Asian Network’s Big Debate in January 2019 to discuss the launch of her first venture, adding that a lack of opportunities for non-instrumental faith music inspired her to pursue her label, Enlighten Records.

Safiyyah has launched a global singing competition, where people can showcase their talent around the world. The winner of the contest will be signed to her new label. Safiyyah added:

I was surprised to see how diverse the applicants were – they are from all over the world, from Nigeria to Indonesia. We’ve even had a number of gospel singers looking to collaborate with Islamic musicians.

We wish Safiyyah the best of luck with her business venture.
