Anas Khitou

How did you hear about the Business School and why did you choose to study here? 

After ten years of work experience, I felt that it was time to get a higher degree combining technology, innovation, and business. Having a family and wanting to relocate countries made it a tough decision, however, Leeds’ rankings, reputation and courses, in addition to the lovely environment, sold it to me. 

Tell us about your course - why did you choose it? What elements of the course inspired you to study here? 

The course aims to equip future digital leaders. This course provides you with the latest skills and capabilities to utilise digital technologies and manage information effectively in business. In addition, the course develops your understanding of the design and implementation of information systems, and how to manage digital information projects through project management methodologies. 

As an entrepreneur with ten years of experience in IT and project management, this course was a logical option for me as I was looking for an opportunity to merge business with IT and open the door for innovation. In addition, this course is supported by researchers from the AIMTech Research Centre at Leeds University Business School, one of Europe’s most influential research centres in information systems and information management. 

What is the best part of your studies? What are you enjoying the most? 

The best part of my studies was the entire experience of being a student again after ten years. I would say that every single day and each new experience brings something meaningful and enjoyable. The thing I most enjoy is the diverse environment of the university, where you can learn a lot from different global cultures and experiences. The other thing is how to write academically. Even though it was not easy at the beginning, it’s an important skill that requires a lot of reading, analytical and critical thinking. 

What are your career aspirations? Do you think the experience and skills you will gain on your course will help you in your future career plans? In what way? 

I am determined to obtain the experience to pass this knowledge on to Syrian stakeholders who work in the development sectors to ensure that future projects in Syria not only provide aid but also meet beneficiaries’ needs. Leaving Syria and working closely with humanitarian and development organisations showed me a real gap in using technology in disasters. The skills and experience I gained from the course will equip me with the right tools to find the best practices for using innovation and technologies to support humanitarian work.  

In pursuit of this goal, I established ‘GenuisTags’, a start-up that delivers innovative solutions to humanitarian actors. Building bridges between academic theory and real managerial challenges is crucial to developing the future of my start-up and supporting more humanitarian actors.  

Do you have any noteworthy achievements from your study at the Business School that you can tell us about e.g. prizes highest scores etc? 

I hold the position of Course Representative. The responsibilities for this role include organising events and socials for fellow students, gathering feedback from students, and ensuring that all voices are heard. 

I was awarded with two awards whilst in this role- a student mentor award, and another for overall performance as class representative.  

 I would like to thank the University of Leeds, Leeds University Union, the Business School, and my colleagues for their trust and support. Thank you for making this possible! 

What is your impression/experience of the facilities, the staff, your peers, the student union, the City of Leeds and the Yorkshire region? 

The city of Leeds is terrific- well-organized, clean, and student-friendly. It’s not a big, crowded city, but it’s also not a small town. As a result, there is a high level of diversity of restaurants, shops, and cafes. The Yorkshire region is simply beautiful, especially if you enjoy nature. 

What would you say your defining memory of studying here was? (eg friendships made confidence in your abilities or any single event that you will always remember?) 

The kindness of the people.  

Would you recommend the Business School to others who are considering studying here? 

Definitely! Without any hesitation. I am very happy with the support I have received from the Business School.
