Feng Li MSc Information Systems and Information Management 2015

Feng Li

How did you hear about Leeds University Business School and why did you choose to study here?

I chose to study at the University of Leeds because it is a member of the Northern Consortium (NCUK). My previous academic achievements allowed me to apply to both the University of Leeds and Sheffield University. I want to pursue a career in business and Leeds University Business School has an excellent reputation, so I chose it for my undergraduate degree.

After I graduated, I decided to study a Masters degree too. I applied for five universities and received unconditional offers from all five. Taking into account several areas (such as family, location, familiarity, course and so on), I decided to stay on at Leeds University Business School.

Tell us about your course – why did you choose it?

I studied BSc Management with Marketing for my undergraduate degree but what I really like is IT, so I decided to study a Masters and change my major. As I don’t have a background in IT I couldn’t choose the relevant IT course but in my final year of undergraduate study I chose two optional modules that were related to information systems, which was a great choice.

When I saw the programme MSc Information Systems and Information Management I decided that this was the course for me. It combines two key areas; IT (theoretical) and business, which is great for people who may not have studied these areas previously.

The guest lectures and panel discussions have been particularly enjoyable as they allowed us to liaise with senior managers directly. I think if I can develop both IT and business skills, it will greatly benefit my future career and will be a dream come true. The reason I chose to study here is because of the high-quality teaching and kind tutors; I know most tutors on this course and they are very kind.

Did you receive a scholarship to study here?

I studied my undergraduate degree at the University of Leeds, which meant that I was eligible for the Leeds Alumni Bursary. This has helped to reduce the financial pressure for my family.

What was the best part of your studies – what did you enjoy the most?

I’ve really enjoyed the guest lectures and panel discussions, which allow us to interact with senior managers and experience the ‘real world’. They have provided an opportunity to practice the skills I have learnt on my course and prepare for entering the workplace after graduation.

What were your career aspirations?

Actually I haven’t formed any specific career plans yet, but what I do in the future will be based on what I have learned so far; maybe marketing, sales or consulting.

What was your experience of the facilities, the staff, your peers, the city of Leeds and the Yorkshire region?

The people here are very kind. Leeds is a thriving city with cinemas, shopping malls, big supermarkets etc. Overall, you can do everything that you want to do and it’s not far away from London.

Are there any experiences outside of your studies that you have particularly enjoyed?

I have joined a lot of societies which are really good (i.e. Tennis, Horse Riding) and through taking part in these activities, I have been able to make friends as well as keep fit. There are several sports and activities that are harder to do in my country so this has been a good chance for me to try something new.
