How did you hear about Leeds University Business School and why did you choose to study here? 

I was aware of the Masters qualifications that Leeds University Business School provided through studying my undergraduate degree here. Whilst searching for suitable postgraduate courses specific to the career I wanted to study I found the Master’s degree in Global Supply Chain Management.

I have an interest in studying and pursuing a career in food supply chains so this course was perfect. Additionally, staying in Leeds allowed me to continue playing for the Leeds Celtics American Football Team, which I had been a part of for the previous three years.

Tell us about your course – why did you choose it?

My course is a comprehensive, in depth study of global supply chains and how they fit into international business. I study modules on logistics, supply chains and strategy which are then put into context by studying concepts from international business. Additionally a small part of the course introduces me to management concepts which are invaluable to my employability. 

As part of my undergraduate degree in Zoology, I studied various topics which were relevant for a sustainable and resilient global food supply chain. I studied the physiology and systems of agricultural animals in particularly high detail which was what prompted me to pursue a food supply chain career. I decided that to begin I would first need to learn supply chain concepts and to gain access to professionals working in supply chain management. Enrolling onto the MSc Global Supply Chain Management gave me the opportunity to do both.

How are you finding the change from a science-based undergraduate degree to a Masters degree in a business subject?

The transition from a hard science to business, a social science, has been enjoyable although not without problems. I had to work hard at first to bring myself up to speed with business terminology. There were also some basic business and management theories that I wasn’t familiar with.

However, there are elements of the programme where I have found that a science background has given me an advantage over my peers. Due to my undergraduate degree I understand the scientific method very well and am already an expert at finding and utilising academic sources for research. This has given me an advantage in adjusting over some of my colleagues with backgrounds in the humanities and arts.

What are the best things about your studies here? 

I am most enjoying the opportunities that being a part of the Business School provides. There are many opportunities for students to attend talks and networking events with many successful influential people.

What are your career aspirations?

I plan to pursue a career in supply chain management, particularly in food supply chains or some other kind of fast moving consumer goods. I believe that the experiences I am gaining at Leeds University Business School will be very important. I think that the access to my tutors and other influential connected people within the Business School is the most important experience this Masters degree offers. I also think the skills I am gaining working with people from other cultures, from all over the world, is a very important skill. 

What has your student experience been like?

The facilities at the Business School are excellent, as is the community of students at The University of Leeds. I have made many friends from all over the world here and have been able to try new activities I would never have had a chance to before. The city of Leeds and Yorkshire is a great place to live. There are loads of fun things to do in Leeds and great places to go eat and drink, whilst Yorkshire has one of the most beautiful areas of countryside in UK. 

Are there any experiences outside of your studies that you particularly enjoy?

I am currently the Treasurer for the Leeds Celtics American Football team, part of Leeds University Union. Participation in extra-curricular activities is one the best parts of my experience here and has helped me make loads of friends and potentially gain employable skills. 

Would you recommend the Business School to others who are considering studying here?

Definitely. Attending Leeds University Business School has been one of the most enjoyable and arguably important periods of my life.
