Life before Leeds
Before joining Leeds University Business School (LUBS), I worked as a Strategy and Performance Associate at Daraz, in Nepal. This role involved developing and implementing strategic initiatives to enhance business performance, managing marketing campaigns and analysing data to drive decision-making. The experience has uplifted my way of thinking, especially in terms of my analytical and strategic thinking skills, which have been valuable in my postgraduate studies.
Scholarship support
I was awarded the Masters Excellence Scholarship at Leeds University. The scholarship has been a tremendous support, alleviating financial stress and allowing me to focus entirely on my studies. It's enabled me to participate in various academic and extracurricular activities, enhancing my overall university experience. The financial support has also allowed me to invest in additional learning resources and take advantage of opportunities such as online courses relevant to my field, further enriching my education.
A ‘perfect place’ to pursue postgraduate studies
My journey to discovering LUBS began with extensive online research, where the University’s reputation and high rankings stood out. I contacted several alumni through LinkedIn and WhatsApp, and their positive experiences and success stories were incredibly encouraging. I also attended a few online events hosted by the University, which provided an insightful overview of the courses and campus life. The University’s website showcases its commitment to academic excellence and student support. All these factors combined made me realise that LUBS was the perfect place to pursue my postgraduate studies.
Blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills
I chose the MSc Economics and Finance at LUBS because of its perfect blend of theoretical modules and practical exposure. The course structure is carefully designed to address modern-day work requirements, combining rigorous academic training with practical applications. The teaching pedagogy at LUBS, which includes case studies, simulations and hands-on projects, was particularly appealing. I was inspired by the way the course integrates economic theories with financial practices, preparing students for a dynamic career in the fraternity of finance and economics. This blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills was exactly what I was looking for to boost my career.
A transformative experience
The professors are not only experts in their fields but also approachable and supportive. The diversity on campus fosters a rich cultural exchange; I’ve had the opportunity to engage in healthy discussions with like-minded peers from around the world. The facilities are top-notch, including well-equipped labs and simulation rooms that enhance learning. Leeds itself is a vibrant, student-friendly city with plenty of places to explore, from historical sites to modern attractions. The affordable living costs and excellent connectivity make it an ideal place for students.
Leadership and teamwork skills
I'm actively involved in the economics and consulting societies at the University. They offer a plethora of networking opportunities and practical workshops that complement my academic learning. I frequently attend networking sessions organised by the Leeds University Union (LUU), which are both enjoyable and enriching. Alongside my Masters, I've been working as a student ambassador for the Business School, which involves representing the University at events and engaging with prospective students. Additionally, I've taken on part-time work as a front office agent in the city centre, which has given me practical experience in customer service and time management. These activities have allowed me to connect with professionals in my field, build lasting friendships and enhance my leadership and teamwork skills.
Support is always available
From the moment I arrived at Leeds, the student support and wellbeing services were there to assist me. Whether it was navigating the registration process, understanding the available facilities, or enrolling in online courses to complement my modules, the staff were incredibly kind and helpful. They provided guidance and resources that made my transition smooth and stress-free. Their continuous support has been invaluable in helping me focus on my studies and make the most of my university experience.
Careers support enhanced my employability
I utilised the Leeds University Business School careers support extensively. The careers team provided invaluable assistance in refining my CV, preparing for interviews, and connecting me with potential employers through job fairs and networking events. The job market is tough and saturated, but the careers support offered coaching sessions, which helped me clarify my career goals and develop a strategic plan to achieve them. The support from the careers service has been crucial in enhancing my employability and preparing me for the competitive job market.
Personal growth
One of my biggest achievements during my time at Leeds has been my personal growth. The interactive nature of the modules has significantly boosted my confidence and communication skills. Engaging in class discussions and presenting projects has made me more outspoken and self-assured. This personal development is a great deal for me, as it will serve me well in my future career. I've also excelled academically, receiving positive feedback from professors and peers alike, which has further fueled my motivation to succeed.
Rigorous academic curriculum
I aspire to build a career in economics and consulting. My time at LUBS has been instrumental in shaping my career trajectory. These resources have equipped me with the skills and confidence to pursue my career goals. They’ve supported me in my CV preparation and practice interviews as well.
International Study Tour
I participated in an International Study Tour to the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management in Germany. This one-week programme was a profound learning experience, focusing on advanced topics such as blockchain, NFTs, climate finance, finance policy, and the European economic landscape. The diverse cohort of 35 students from different cultural backgrounds provided a rich environment for intercultural exchange. The lectures and workshops in Frankfurt offered insights into cutting-edge financial technologies and policies, which I will be able to integrate into my career in economics. This experience not only broadened my understanding of global finance but also enhanced my personal development, communication and teamwork skills. The staff members who made the trip possible were the best people ever in terms of applications, guidance and support.
Welcome events
Leeds provided exceptional support before and after my arrival in the UK. The constant emails with tips and tricks for settling down were incredibly helpful. The accommodation team was super supportive, ensuring I had a smooth transition into my new home. Upon arrival, I attended several international welcome events and orientations, which made the cultural shift easier and helped me network with other international students. These efforts made my move to the UK a positive and welcoming experience.
