How did you hear about the Business School and why did you choose to study here?
I wanted to specialise in the consulting field within the UK and while researching the institutions that provide a Masters degree in the area, I came across Leeds University Business School. As I have had prior experience within IT sales and professional services, I was specifically looking for subjects that best suit my interests, skills and future job opportunities. Leeds University Business School’s selection of modules, staff profiles and resources were among the best I looked at.
Tell us about your course - why did you choose it?
IT professional services and consulting is a great industry and I am passionate about solving client problems. The choice of modules to support my interest and passion was a combination of academic learning, workshop and hands-on projects.
The core and optional modules were a perfect fit for my interests. The overall course structure gave me in-depth learning of the Consulting Lifecycle alongside workshops with professors who have great industry experience and knowledge on a range of topics.
What is the best part of your studies?
The best parts of the MSc Management Consulting course are both the vast range of topics introduced during lectures and seminars, but also the opportunity to interact with students from different cultures and backgrounds. The University Libraries and ‘Skills@Library’ support have also been great resources to enhance my personal skills.
What are your career aspirations? Do you think the experience and skills you will gain on your course will help you in your future career plans?
I aspire to become an IT Sales and Consulting professional. Thus, the consulting course at the Business School has given me the confidence and knowledge required to work on a consulting project. Additionally, I have gained mentors for life in my professors, whose advice supports me to progress further in my career. The buddy scheme helped me connect with the alumni of the course who are very helpful and share great connections in the industry.
If you are not from the UK, how was the transition to a foreign country? Did the University offer support or services that you found helpful?
I migrated to the UK from India during the COVID-19 pandemic. The University support offered during this time was very easy to access and made me more comfortable as I settled in. I was able to book my accommodation prior to arriving in Leeds wherein they provided necessary travel information and an arrival food box and bedding.
There are many students led clubs and societies and something for everyone to participate in. I took up a role as a student ambassador to support the Business School’s events and share my experiences of Masters study. The wonderful sports centre, The Edge, has sport-related activities and classes such as Pilates, Zumba, fitness and swimming sessions. In addition, the campus offers theatres, cultural activities and parties where one can make friends and socialize.
I encourage students to be open to meeting people from different cultures, host food parties, and go on trips around Yorkshire. There is also ample information around mental health-related advice on the University of Leeds portal if you miss home.
What is your impression/experience of the facilities, the staff, your peers, the student union, the City of Leeds and the Yorkshire region?
I love our campus! I personally felt proud when I saw the architecture and art landmarks across our campus. There is history, greenery and opportunity for adventure throughout. My personal favourites are Leeds University Union and the Roger Stevens pond. During my course, I have also visited several libraries to explore a range of books and study spaces.
The staff are very approachable and motivating. They often insist on participation and encourage feedback throughout the course and dissertation. I have had the opportunity to meet my personal tutor over coffee to discuss coursework and personal development.
The city of Leeds is a wonderful student-friendly city to explore. I enjoyed taking a stroll across the city centre and Hyde Park which is very close to the university campus. Leeds has some great cafes, parks, galleries, trails, shopping centres and food joints.
Are there any experiences outside of your studies that you particularly enjoyed?
I am still exploring the city and plan to extend my stay as I find it safe and affordable. There are several free activities such as art galleries, rooftop parties, hiking and cycling trails. There are events such as the campus tour, theatres and cinema nights sponsored by the University, which one can enjoy with friends.
A few nearby places to explore are York, the Lake District, Scarborough, the Yorkshire Dales and Ilkley. There are also several pubs and clubs to hangout in and great restaurants and food trucks across the city centre. Definitely try out Leeds Dock and explore the wall murals too.
What would you say your defining memory of studying here was?
The campus! I would love to revisit the campus and my teaching rooms at the Business School to relive the great time I had as a student. The campus is so engaging and beautiful that no matter where I sit, I get a completely different view and vibe from my surrounding.
Would you recommend the Business School to others who are considering studying here?
The Business School is a great place to learn and develop skills, identify areas where you lack expertise and need improvement, and challenge yourself to improve these aspects during your course. Participation during lectures and seminars is a great way to get the most out of your studies. Group work is another great way to develop teamwork skills. Make use of Skills@Library and the Careers Centre to aid your personal development and realise your career aspirations.
