Why did you decide to study for an MBA?
I worked in the fashion retail industry as a buyer for six years and had good experience in product development, merchandising, sourcing, range planning and new season launch. The career progression which I was aiming for in the coming years was to become a category manager.
For this position, I knew I had to be very strong in numbers, and business administration knowledge. Whereas previously, my knowledge and skills were very product-centric. So I decided an MBA would be the best way to up-skill in preparation for taking on a more senior role.
What were your reasons for choosing Leeds University Business School?
I chose Leeds University Business School because of the rankings and reputation. Also, the location of the Business School was an important factor. I wanted to be in an international city with maximum exposure to international business and the global fashion industry - and Leeds is known for both.
What is the best part of your studies? What are you enjoying the most?
The best part of my course was the module structure and diverse cohort of our classroom. I have learnt a lot about the different cultures and professional background of my classmates. This was also my first international academic experience. The MBA is a challenging course, and I have enjoyed every bit of it.
Did you have any other noteworthy experiences/highlights during your time at Leeds?
In our first semester, our New Venture Challenge was working on a strategy product for Konica Minolta. We pitched a Virtual Fitting Room for the fashion retail stores and I was the lead presenter as I come from the industry. Getting to know the company in depth, and consulting on a new business strategy, was an exciting challenge. I found working with clients at this level particularly beneficial in preparing for my future career roles.
Tells us more about the consulting challenge that you undertook on your MBA? What did this entail, which company did you do the challenge with and what did you learn from the experience?
I worked with White Label Loyalty on the marketing strategy for the new product of the company. We had to test product feasibility in the existing market and present a marketing strategy. The consulting challenge went over the course of a month, with constant direct interaction with the client.
Moreover, I have a great interest in the consulting sector and chose to do my dissertation research in the management consulting field. The research was on The Role of Strategic Communication and Client-Consultant Relationship on the successful delivery of a consulting project.
What would you say is your defining memory of studying here is? (eg friendships made, confidence in your abilities, or any single event that you will always remember?)
The network which I have established during this one year and the confidence to handle business challenges and international business experience are very valuable.
What is your impression/experience of the facilities, the staff, your peers, the City of Leeds and the region itself?
The staff and my colleagues were very professional and supportive. Especially our Programme Director James who is very experienced in his field. He often shared his work experience in class, it was very valuable to link-up the theory and its real-life application.
