How firms from India are stepping up in the globalising world

On 4 March, the James E Lynch India and South Asia Business Centre at the University of Leeds proudly hosted the 'Global Outlook of Indian Industries@75 Conclave'.

The event welcomed eminent scholars, dignitaries and leading managerial teams to discuss the factors that have contributed to the growth of the Indian economy, and celebrates the 75^th anniversary of India’s independence.

India now boasts the 5th largest economy in the world, behind the USA, China, Japan and Germany. The prestigious line-up of representatives provided lively analyses highlighting India’s leading contribution to the world economy in trade, tourism and technology, as well as the importance of the India-UK partnership for the West Yorkshire region.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Hai-Sui Yu, and Leeds University Business School’s Executive Dean, Professor Julia Bennell, provided a warm welcome to the audience.

Her Excellency Gaitri Issar Kumar, The High Commissioner of India provided a special address. She emphasised that India’s global leadership is rising not only in an array of industries but also in tackling societal issues such as environmental sustainability.

Dr Shashank Vikram, The Consul General of India for Midlands and North England enlightened the audience with a detailed presentation, highlighting the changing structure of the Indian economy and the underpinning policy measures taken by the government.

Lord David Howell emphasised India's significance in the global economy, and Cllr Shabir Pandor stressed the importance of India-UK relations in West Yorkshire business and commerce.
