Description

Complex and Open Innovation for Networked Society (COINS) is a European Industrial Doctorate network that creates a sustainable platform for researchers to engage in collaborative production of knowledge by investigating challenges for managing processes of complex and open innovation created by advances in digital technology. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 675866.

It is based on strategic partnership between University of Leeds and Ericsson AB. The network's researchers study development of innovation capabilities required for organisations of different types to effectively respond to institutional, social and technological complexity in innovation ecosystems.

Pervasive digital technologies, which integrate deeply into the core of products and services, radically change the nature of how innovation processes are organised and how organisations are strategically managed. Innovation is becoming increasingly open as organisations search for relevant knowledge generated outside their borders. This increases innovation complexity, as collaboration is required among diverse constituencies, such as academia, industry, government and citizens.

This complexity is further compounded with the ability of digital technology to create innovative solutions that blur the boundaries between established industrial sectors and produce products and services that bring previously separate user experiences together.

Marie Curie Fellowship researchers

Five Marie Curie Fellowship researchers, accompanied by an experienced, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral group of supervisors, have joined the University of Leeds to study the development of innovation capabilities required for organisations of different types to effectively respond to institutional, social and technological complexity in innovation ecosystems.

Dave Larkin

Research: My research examines how advances in digital technologies (e.g. IoT, 5G) are shaping the development of emergent market categories (e.g. smart cities, smart factories). It specifically considers how involved actors use both discursive and material representations to shape the symbolic meaning system of an emergent category.

Recent and upcoming activities:

  • Larkin, D. 2018. The Categorization of an Emergent Digital Technology: The Internet of Things. Leeds Festival of Ideas, 28 February 2018, University of Leeds.

Charlotte Krumlinde

Research: My research focuses on the relationship between intra-organisational structures and a fine-grained taxonomy of innovation. In terms of drivers for innovation such as, team composition and complexity and distance of innovative outcomes.

Recent and upcoming activities:

  • Drivers for Innovation and Patent Development, presented at a workshop organised by Ericsson on 13 February 2018

Anna Plotnikova

Research: My research interest lays in the area of strategy processes and practices, and specifically in understanding open strategy within large organisations. Open strategy can help organisations to find innovative solutions to complex problems of the dynamic business environment of today, by diving into a larger pool of ideas. However, open strategy is complex and nuanced phenomenon which has to be managed carefully. By being a part of the COINS project I have a great opportunity to examine real cases of open strategy in a large multinational organisation and try to answer some of the questions open strategy raises.

Recent and upcoming activities:

  • AOM Specialised Conference on Big Data and Managing in a Digital Economy, Surrey, UK, APRIL 18-20, 2018
  • SMS Specialised Conference, Sharing Strategies for the Connected World 7-9 June 2018
  • EURAM Reykjavik 2018 18-19 June 2018

Fathiro Putra

Research: I am investigating how an incumbent firm pursues opportunities in a nascent industry (i.e. the Internet of Things). In particular, I am looking at how organisations can reconfigure to explore opportunities created by emerging technologies and what the role of middle-managers is in driving a firm’s strategic transition during the exploration phase of a new industry.

Recent and upcoming activities:

  • Resource Reconfiguration in an Emerging Industry: A case study of Ericsson in the Emerging Internet of Things (IoT), poster presentation at Festival of Ideas 2018, Leeds University Business School
  • Resource Recombination for Emerging Industry, presented at a workshop Building and Orchestrating Emerging Innovation Ecosystem, organised by Ericsson Research on 25th January 2018.

  • The Impact of Strategic Intent on the Dynamic of Reconfiguration Strategy: A Case of Ericsson, to be presented at Strategic Management Society annual conference in Paris, 22-25 September 2018.

Adam Uhrdin

Research: My research investigates the role innovation managers play to enable and facilitate corporate entrepreneurship and open innovation in large firms. I do this by studying the evolution of an open innovation platform established by the telecom company Ericsson, which is intended to facilitate intrapreneurship and co-innovation around emerging digital technologies such as the Internet of Things.

Recent and upcoming activities:

  • Enabling Open Business Models for the IoT through Management Innovation to be presented at Strategic Management Society special conference in Oslo, 7 – 9 June 2018.
