What is an inaugural lecture?
An inaugural lecture is a significant milestone in any academic’s career, recognising their promotion to Professor. It also offers an opportunity for our new professorial colleagues to showcase their work and innovative research with a broad audience, including members of the public, family, friends, and colleagues. This lecture is the first of a new faculty-wide series at Leeds University Business School celebrating our professors’ achievements and the exceptional teaching, research, and expertise across our departments.
About this lecture
Professor Alberti ‘s inaugural lecture on “the Politics of Migration and Precarious Work” will address a global challenge in policy and research concerning the management of migration by states and firms and the growth of precarious employment, drawing from her extensive research on labour migration.
Illustrating her multi-actor and intersectionality-sensitive approach to the position of migrant workers in today’s urban economies as well as the roles that governments, private organisations and civil society play in managing migration, this lecture examines the ambivalent meanings of regulation and employer practices in shaping employment relations for migrants with a focus on low-paid sectors.
