Business Open Day 2024

We invite local business professionals to join us and find out more about the opportunities to partner with Leeds University Business School.

About the day

Following the opening panel seesion there will be nine plenary sessions covering the themes of Collaborate, Inspire and Learn.

Collaborate:

Our academics conduct wide ranging research that has real world impact and our ability to innovate leads to new products, services and solutions. We can help you translate ideas and challenges into business opportunities. For example through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and Research Projects.

Inspire:

Collaborating with students through work placements or one-off projects can be beneficial to you and your business. We can help you to recruit graduates, organise internships and raise your company profile. We can also find opportunities for you to share your knowledge and expertise with the next generation through mentoring, guest lectures, our Leaders in Residence programme and our Enterprise Ambassadors.

Learn:

We will showcase a wide range of Professional Leadership Programmes for both individuals and teams, customised and open. As a research-intensive institution, our programmes are informed and delivered by leading academics across the full spectrum of business disciplines.

Attend this session to hear about Johnson & Johnson Medical, part of the Johnson & Johnson Inc family, a renowned global brand in medical devices. Based in Leeds and collaborating with the Leeds University Business School through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), the partners are creating new solutions for supply chain management harnessing the power of data and digital technologies.

Mentoring / Leaders in Residence / Enterprise Ambassadors

Attend this session to hear about volunteering opportunities to inspire our students with real world insights. We'll outline three ways to get involved: our Nurturing Talent Mentor Scheme; our Leaders in Residence network; and our Enterprise Ambassadors programme. We'll share the positive impact these initiatives have on our students, and how you might benefit from the experience too. The presenters will talk about their involvement and what they have gained from sharing their expertise with our students.

Executive Leadership Apprenticeships

The Leeds Executive Leadership Apprenticeship is a level 7 program designed for senior leaders within organisations. Learn more about how to fund apprenticeships, access the apprenticeship levy, and more about the programme. Combining theoretical learning with practical application, the programme covers a range of key areas such as strategic leadership, organizational culture, and change management. The program enhances decision-making, communication, and problem-solving skills, providing valuable insights for professional growth.

Collaboration and partnership for online businesses 

In this session, Andy Jones from Honeyboot & Lemon and Dr Jim Baxter from IDEA, The Ethics Centre at the University of Leeds will talk about their collaboration on a new online training package for business in ethical decision-making. As well as hearing about their experience of working in partnership, there will be a chance to see how the result combines ethical insights gained from Jim’s academic background with Andy’s innovative and immersive approach to learning product design.

Student Project / Innovation Thinking & Practice  

Attend this session to learn more about how you and your organisation can benefit from being involved with student projects. In this session you will learn about the ‘Innovation Thinking and Practice’ module and how students can provide ideas and solutions to industry innovation challenges through team-based projects. You will also hear case studies from organisations that have been previously involved and how they’ve benefitted.

Custom Programmes

This session provides an overview of how the Executive Education team works alongside organisations to design and deliver customised managerial and leadership development programmes. It will highlight the collaborative and structured process that we follow to understand the partner organisation’s priorities and purpose and subsequently craft bespoke interventions aligned to these. The session will also include the case study of the Executive Digital Transformation Programme that was custom designed for Liberty Global. In addition to hearing about the programme design approach, participants will also get the opportunity to hear first-hand from the Liberty Global executives about their own experiences working with the Executive Education team; and, about the positive impact that the programme has had across the Liberty Global ecosystem.

This is a new initiative for our annual Business Open Day. Come and talk to members of our External Engagement team and we will help you develop your nascent ideas on how you might want to collaborate with the Business School or wider university.

Recruiting our students and graduates

In this session you’ll hear about how to work with us to recruit our students whether that be through internships, placement years or graduate jobs. We’ll go through the different processes involved and you’ll also hear from a student about the benefits to them of working with you. There will be lots of useful information, signposting, and top tips for hiring our students.

The Exceptional Non-Executive Director Programme

Ben Westerby from Westerby Consultancy Ltd, will be joining us to give his personal perspective from participating in the Exceptional NED training programme.  The programme has been uniquely designed to enable experienced business executives to gain the skills and knowledge to become an effective Non-Executive Director (NED) through a blend of workshop sessions and three-month placement as a NED at a high-growth SME. The programme is for individuals with experience at executive level who are looking to further develop their skills as a NED and is ideal for those who have not yet undertaken a NED role or who are in the early stages of the transition.

Is there car parking available nearby?

There is limited on-street parking around the University and a public pay and display car park on Woodhouse Lane. Visitors who would like to park on the University of Leeds campus can find out more information by visiting our Car Parking website: https://estates.leeds.ac.uk/our-services/car-parking/

There are some disabled parking bays outside of the building. Please contact the External Engagement Team at LUBSExternalEngagement@leeds.ac.uk to book a space.

Is the building accessible?

The building is fully wheelchair accessible. The lecture theatre has an Assistive Listening System. There is level access into this room via the lift.

I have special dietary requirements, will there be anything suitable for me?

There will be vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free refreshments available. Please contact with the External Engagement Team at LUBSExternalEngagement@leeds.ac.uk if you have any additional dietary requirements.
