Our Level 7 Senior Leadership Masters Degree Apprenticeship is an innovative degree programme for senior managers working in the public or private sector. This dynamic course is designed to develop you as a leader and take you to the next stage of your career.

Supported by your employer, this course provides the opportunity to gain a high quality Masters qualification from a world-ranked and triple accredited business school.

You’ll develop knowledge of the fundamentals of leadership, gaining understanding of the latest business and management theory and how to apply this to challenges in your workplace. You’ll also build the essential skills expected of leaders and managers working in a fast-paced environment including analytical thinking, decision-making, problem solving, business and information technologies and communication skills.

Flexible and practical learning

The apprenticeship is taught through a combination of classroom and online teaching, plus one-to-one coaching. The rest of your time will be spent in your workplace, giving you the opportunity to practically apply what you learn.

This approach offers a high degree of flexibility so that you can balance your study and work. You’ll be able to access online teaching and resources at a time, place and pace to suit you. Your learning will be fully supported by a workplace mentor from your employer and a personal tutor from the University.

Throughout the course you will apply your skills and critical understanding to strategic projects within your organisation, and assessments will be integrated within your workplace environment. You will undertake strategic developmental roles within your organisation, applying the theory to practice.


Leeds University Business School has triple accreditation from the three leading bodies, AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS.

Course content

Through a variety of taught modules you’ll gain understanding of the fundamentals of business leadership, including managing change and innovation, finance, strategy, decision-making, digital technologies and international business. You’ll also take a summer school module in Tackling Global Challenges.

You’re encouraged to reflect on your leadership journey every step of the way with our Positive Leadership module, which supports your development throughout the apprenticeship and equips you for your career.

The culmination of the apprenticeship is the Live Business Project. Supported by a University supervisor, you will test your initiative by identifying a current issue within your organisation and devising a solution, reporting back to your manager.

This apprenticeship also provides a rare opportunity for professionals in the healthcare sector to pursue an optional pathway in healthcare leadership. Modules for this pathway will be led by the School of Medicine in year two.

Course content aligns with the Level 7 Senior Leadership apprenticeship standards as set by the Institute for Apprenticeships.

Learning and teaching

Teaching is interactive and supportive, combining online and face-to-face learning with one-to-one coaching.

The latest action-based teaching techniques will stimulate and enhance your skills development, allowing you to experience the ‘real world’ challenges of leading enterprise, both locally and globally.

The digital content of the modules will be industry focused and led by professional academics who are also practitioners in their field, both nationally and internationally.


Assessments are varied with a strong practical focus, applied to solving live examples and real business problems. This will include reports, case study projects, presentations, reflective learning and classroom discussions. This wide range gives you the opportunity to work to your strengths and gain skills in different forms of expression.

Applying, fees and funding

Entry requirements

A bachelor degree with a 2.2 (hons) is preferred. If you do not have a bachelor degree, a relevant professional qualification and evidence of significant work experience at a senior level may be considered.

GCSE: Apprentices must achieve English and Maths grade C/4 or above, or level 2 functional skills, before taking the end point assessment or achieving an apprenticeship framework. If you don’t have the required GCSEs you may also be asked to take tests in English and Maths.

Work experience: A minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a leadership and management position. For those undertaking the healthcare pathway, a minimum of 5 years’ work experience in a health or social care setting is normally required. Experience should include relevant managerial responsibilities, for example systems, finance, HR, IT, logistics, marketing or selling.

We accept a range of international equivalent qualifications.

If English is not your first language, you need to pass an approved English language test.

English language requirements

IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component. For other English qualifications, read English language equivalent qualifications.

Please make sure you submit your application for the correct start date.

For example, if you wish to apply for January 2019, please select ‘MSc Senior Leadership PT 2018/19’ from the course list, which you will find by selecting the Search button next to the course title field.

Documents and information you’ll need:

  • Two references – one academic and one professional from your current line manager endorsing your application for the programme
  • Copy of your degree certificate and transcripts
  • If you don’t have a first degree, evidence of your professional qualifications and any other CPD qualifications
  • Evidence of your GCSE Maths and English pass grades, or an equivalent qualification (please contact our admissions team for details of the qualifications we accept)
  • A full CV
  • Evidence of your English language qualifications, if English is not your first language

Selection principles

We will take all of our entry criteria into consideration when evaluating your application, as well as your post-apprenticeship career goals and whether the apprenticeship is likely to help you fulfil them.

Next steps

Wherever possible we conduct face-to-face interviews with applicants. The Programme Director speaks to all potential candidates before an offer is made.

If you receive an offer of a place, we usually allow a maximum of four to six weeks for you to accept and confirm your place. You’ll need to send us original or certified copies of your supporting documents before you can register for the programme.
