Abstract:
How do we connect with others around us and build strong working relationships? How do we boost morale and motivation or stimulate people to fight for social justice? In this webinar, I argue that the key to achieving these goals is shaping other people’s feelings. I provide an overview of my research programme on this topic of ‘interpersonal emotion regulation’, considering how and why we strategically influence the feelings of those around us and the effects of doing so on people’s working lives.
About the speaker:
Karen Niven is a Professor of Organisational Psychology at the Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester. Her research focuses on social relationships in the workplace, with particular interests in how and why people manage the feelings of relationship partners and the ‘darker side’ of work relationships (e.g., bullying). Karen has written widely on these topics, having published over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and edited two popular science books. She currently serves as Associate Editor for European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology and for Organizational Psychology Review.
