Economics Division to host association for Heterodox economics

PhD students from across the UK and abroad will attend a research methods workshop at Leeds University Business School this week

The event, run for PhD students on 18th and 19th January, is being organised by the Association for Heterodox Economics (AHE), in collaboration with the Economics Division.

The AHE works to promote open and tolerant debate in economics through a pluralist approach to theory, method, and ideology. This is the third time that the workshop has been held at the University of Leeds, which has a continuing tradition of doing economics in open, critical ways.

The workshop will cover topics in research not normally covered in economics training, including:

• Reorienting economics to match method with social material
• Quantitative analysis applicable to open economic systems
• Qualitative methods
• Social network theory in Economics
• Mixing quantitative and qualitative data
• Publishing work which uses non-standard methodologies

Session leaders will include Professor Bruce Cronin from the University of Greenwich, Professor Paul Downward from Loughborough University, Dr Annina Kaltenbrunner from the University of Leeds, Dr Jamie Morgan from Leeds Beckett University, and Professor Wendy Olsen from the University of Manchester.
