Profile
Moshfique's primary research focuses on corporate financing and investment decisions, corporate restructuring and alternative financing. His objective is to establish how popular finance theories could help solve economic and financial problems in emerging markets. As there are several essential differences between developed markets and emerging markets in terms of governance and institutional quality, he acknowledges that the understanding we gather from standard finance theories may not be enough to solve the financial problems of those emerging markets. As such, his research has highlighted these issues and tried to suggest alternative solutions by employing a multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates formal and informal institutions within standard finance theories and extends the knowledge by looking at their implications.
He also works on establishing how social challenges can affect firms’ financial position by examining the implications of contemporary social issues, including culture, the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit, ESG, terrorism, and religion, on firms’ financial decision-making and overall quality of governance.
Much of his work on emerging market firms has provided theoretical and empirical support for the adoption of mainstream finance theories in the context of emerging markets. His recent work on green bonds funded by the Institute of Capital Markets in Bangladesh provides comprehensive evidence on the adoption and operation of green bonds in Bangladesh’s capital market to promote sustainable development. Other consultancy work includes projects funded by the Asian Development Bank and Work Bank to promote financial sector reform in Bangladesh and examine the viability of microfinance programmes in Bangladesh.
Moshfique has been working at Leeds University Business School since January 2014. Before joining LUBS, he worked at the University of York, Leeds Beckett University, and the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
