Experience
Frank McDonald has worked in international business research and teaching for 20 years. Prior to this he worked for 20 years in the field of economic theory and the economics of the EU. He was chair of AIB UK&I Chapter from 2007 to 2011, co-founded and was co-chair of the BAM SIG in International Business and International Management (2012- 2016). He is a visiting Professor at Copenhagen Business School, ESC Rennes and Universitt Viadrina, Frankfurt Oder. He has been head of department and then Associated Dean at Bradford University School of Management and has held various leadership posts at the Universities of Hull and Plymouth.
Research
His research has been focused on issues connected to resource based views of MNC strategy and organizational structures, how institutions and spatial factors affect MNC strategy and employee relations in MNCs. His current work is centred on the interaction of formal and informal institutions and the affects on international business transactions that involve risk to intellectual property. He is also working on MNCs strategy and operations in world cities.

Institutions and internationalization by firms, protection of intellectual property rights, digitalisation and Global Value Chains and the effects of geographical factors on the location and operationalisation decisions of multinational corporations.
