Professor Spencer comments on work time reduction

Head of Economics Division and Professor of Economics and Political Economy, David Spencer, was quoted in Danish weekly broadsheet publication, Weekendavisen, in an article about work time reduction.

The article discusses work-life balance and the idea of postponing the retirement age in Denmark to lower working time for the nation across the board.

Professor Spencer commented: “I do not say I agree, but some believe that capitalism is a work-based society where there are barriers, economic as well as political, which prevent more leisure time, not least because an increase in leisure time creates more time for non-capitalist thinking. Reductions in working hours have always been achieved in opposition to employers who fear it, but the number of work hours has been lowered several times in history without compromising living standards.”
