How did you hear about Leeds University Business School and why did you choose to study here?

While I was in sixth form, I decided I wanted to study Accounting and Finance at a top-ranked Business School. After researching Leeds University Business School, it was the impressive league table rankings that formed a major part of my decision. Upon visiting Leeds, I was very impressed with the vast array of opportunities for students, both on the course and also extra-curricular.

Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it? What elements of the degree inspired you to study it?  

I study Accounting and Finance and I am currently in my fourth year having undertaken a study year abroad in Montreal, Canada. I always knew I wanted to study a mathematical-based course, but the syllabus for the BSc Accounting and Finance also boasted a wealth of opportunities to gain knowledge that I could use in the workplace.

A significant factor behind me choosing this course was the enthusiasm and passion of the lecturers as I knew this would be hugely inspiring for me throughout my time on my course.

Also, the fact that many of the tutors had previously worked in practice appealed to me as I knew they would have had experience of putting their theory into practice in the workplace. Finally, I was also drawn to the opportunities available for me to complete professional accounting examinations through the course.

What is the best part of your studies? What are you enjoying the most?         

I have relished the opportunity to study languages alongside my degree using discovery modules. I have been able to significantly advance my French language skills whilst also making friends outside of my course. This semester, I will be taking German and Italian to challenge myself even further.

Tell us about the skills and experience you have developed by studying abroad.

During my study year abroad in Montreal, my horizons were expanded by the experience of living and studying abroad. I met people from all around the world, and increased my independence by living in a different continent. University education in Canada is very different, so I had the opportunity to take specialised international Accounting and Finance modules which aren’t available at Undergraduate level in the UK.

I also took cultural modules about the History of Montreal, which gave me an insight into this fantastic city. Outside of the classroom, I was very lucky to be able to visit places I’d never have the opportunity to see otherwise.

Are there any places of interest in Montreal/ the surrounding area that you would recommend?

I loved exploring Old Montreal, there are lots of hidden gems. For the best views I recommend walking up Mount Royal, you can see the old town and the skyscrapers behind. Outside the city, there’s a lot to see depending on what you’re interested in. But you definitely shouldn’t miss the Montmorency Falls – a huge waterfall on the Montmorency river, 83 meters high.

What are your career aspirations? Do you think the experience and skills you will gain from your degree course will help you in your future career plans? In what way?

My career aspirations are to become a chartered accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales. I hope to gain the relevant corporate experience through securing a role at KPMG, having already attended their very useful insight days.

Working towards chartered status would strengthen both the tangible and inter-personal skills I have acquired and developed throughout my time at university.

What is your impression/experience of the facilities, the staff, your peers, the student union?           

Leeds University Union is award winning and it has so many useful facilities, such as union square, where there is a hairdressers, a salon, many food outlets and a supermarket.

The staff at the university are very helpful and they all have designated contact hours, where they are available to chat about the course.

Are there any other experiences outside of your studies that you have particularly enjoyed? eg participation in extra-curricular activities or groups, nightlife, the region's historic places of interest? What would you recommend to future students?

Leeds is a great student city and is well placed in the North. In the surrounding areas there are the small, quaint towns of Ilkley and Otley and we are also very close to the Yorkshire Dales if you like to go walking. The University of Leeds offers over 300 student societies for all interests. I am also a Christian, and have found a church family in Leeds, called Life Church.

Would you recommend the Business School to others who are considering studying here?

I would recommend the Business School because of its inclusive environment and its abundance of opportunities. It is full of supportive staff, both academic and professional, and I have made friends for life!
