Professor Forde comments on 'firing and rehiring'
On 10 May Professor Chris Forde commented in the international business media on the controversial practice by some firms of ‘firing and rehiring’ during the pandemic.
The practice involves dismissing employees and re-engaging them on inferior terms. An investigation by Britain's Observer newspaper claimed that nine of 13 companies accused of firing and rehiring made profits or increased executive pay.
Forde, Professor of Employment Studies and Co-Director of the Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change (CERIC) commented:
“It is a basic assault on workers' rights and there are alternative means through which they (employers) might achieve the same outcomes”.
Forde is a Professor of Employment Studies and Co-Director of the Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change.
