Renato offers practical advice to students for career success
Renato Barrientos (MSc Organisational Psychology and Business, 2024) returned to the Business School to share his insights and experiences with students as part of our ‘Lunch with Alumni’ series.
The session offered students a valuable opportunity to hear directly from Renato about his professional journey and the experiences that shaped his path from postgraduate study to a career in HR at a global organisation.
Renato, now a B:Managers Advisor at Burberry, began the session by reflecting on his time at Leeds. During his master’s degree, he took part in the International Study Tour at Audencia Business School in France, an experience that broadened his understanding of global organisational behaviour and strengthened his cross-cultural awareness. He also collaborated with AtkinsRéalis through the Behaviour Lab for his dissertation, which allowed him to apply academic theory to real business challenges and develop practical research skills that continue to support his work today.
Since graduating, Renato has progressed from an HR Operations Coordinator to his current advisory role at Burberry, where he supports and coaches line managers across the UK on a wide range of people-related issues. Before joining Leeds, he also gained international experience across banking, oil and gas, engineering and maintenance, and manufacturing – insights he drew upon throughout his talk.
The event attracted over 60 students, who were eager to hear his reflections and ask questions during an engaging and informal Q&A session. Renato shared thoughtful, relatable advice about navigating life as an international student, adapting to UK culture, and building confidence in a new professional environment. He encouraged students to start practising key skills early, seek out opportunities for growth, and take proactive steps toward the careers they hope to pursue in the future.
The Business School is excited to continue its ‘Lunch with Alumni’ series, bringing more inspiring stories to students throughout the academic year.
