Southeast Asia alumni events discuss AI’s impact on management

In February 2025, the Business School brought together alumni in Bangkok and Taipei for an evening of insightful discussions and valuable networking opportunities.

The events featured an engaging session by Dr. Josh Morton, Associate Professor of Strategy and Technology, who explored the rapid rise of AI and its transformative implications for management, sparking dynamic conversations and fresh perspectives among attendees.

Josh explored how AI is reshaping decision-making, competitive intelligence, and strategic planning within organisations. By highlighting real-world applications, he demonstrated how businesses can leverage AI for efficiency while remaining cautious of its limitations. Emphasising adaptability, he outlined how companies must prepare for AI-driven disruption and ensure that human expertise remains at the core of management practices.

Discussions explored generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and DeepSeek, examining their influence on competitive intelligence, sustainability, and market adaptation. While AI enhances efficiency and provides valuable insights, alumni reflected on the enduring importance of human judgment, creativity, and strategic thinking in business.

Alumni shared career updates and experiences with AI in their respective industries. Conversations ranged from automation and strategic decision-making to AI’s role in startups and large corporations. Some alumni highlighted how AI has streamlined operations and freed up managerial time, while others cautioned against over-reliance on AI-generated outputs. The need for agility and preparedness for AI-driven disruptions emerged as key themes.

Reflecting on the events, Dr. Josh Morton shared: “It was a joy to be part of these alumni events in Bangkok and Taipei. It is always a pleasure to catch up with familiar faces and also connect with new alumni who have ventured into such a fascinating range of careers. The energy in the room was contagious - lively discussions, laughter, and a shared enthusiasm for exchanging ideas made for truly memorable gatherings. From thought-provoking conversations about AI and its impact on management to hearing about the journeys alumni have embarked on, all the interactions were a testament to the vibrancy of these communities. I left feeling inspired by their stories, from ambitious startups to leadership roles in global companies, and grateful for the opportunity to engage with such lovely groups in both countries. A huge thank you to everyone for attending, and a special shout out to the Alumni and External Engagement team for their brilliant organisation of these events!”

Anna Wellard, Alumni Relations Manager played a key role in supporting the events, facilitating engaging discussions and strengthening alumni connections.
