ATOD (SPATO) - Seminar Series

Algorithmic Risk Profiling in Housing

Leeds University Business School Analytics, Technology and Operations Department invite you to the first seminar of Semester 2 in our Strategic Perspectives in Analytics Technology & Operations Seminar Series (SPATO).

Our first seminar of this semester will be about the Algorithmic Risk Profiling in Housing and be hybrid. Please see the seminar Eventbrite link below for further information and to register for attendance.

Speaker: David Beer

Title: Algorithmic Risk Profiling in Housing.

Abstract: This talk reflects on some of the key findings from a recent collaborative research project that explored the implementation of algorithms and data in risk assessment and access to housing. The talk will give some background to the project and to the work on data circulations that preceded it. It will then explore three ideas that have come from that project. First, it will explore the types of automation hesitancy that were observed in the interview participant’s accounts of their practices. It will then look at the concept of the manual and the part it plays in the demarcation of embodiment in algorithmic decision-making. This part of the talk will focus on how value is attached to the manual when algorithmic systems are implemented. Third, inspired by Fourcade and Healy’s book The Ordinal Society, it will look at the emergence of an ordinal tenant, as defined by the way that individuals are categorised and how they then respond to those categorisations. The talk will close by reflecting on the broader problem of studying a recursive society.
