This session will enable us to share ideas about what helps and hinders the development of an inclusive and supportive research culture and will explore the following key themes:

  • Supportive culture generic initiatives Aimed at those new to /not traditionally involved in research
  • In search of equity
  • Embedding EDI Recognizing particular forms of exclusion; identifying particular forms of support
  • Surviving the Current Financial Climate

Schedule

The session will include a mixture of short talks, small group exchange and (numbers permitting) whole group discussion.

10.00 – 10.05 Welcome/introductions
10.05 – 10.25 Break-out rooms addressing key themes and facilitated by panellists so that any key questions can be fed back and addressed in future sessions
10.25 – 10.35 Comfort break
10.35 – 11.30 Panel discussion and Q&A/whole group discussion

Speakers

Professor Clare Rigg (Lancaster University) – Clare is a Professor of Post-experience Management Education at Lancaster University Management School. Her academic career has prioritised teaching and research that is close to practice and is concerned with enabling students to make a critical impact in their organisations and communities. Her work has been published in all the major management learning and education journals. She is Associate Editor of the British Journal of Management and Journal of Management Education and an editorial board member and former Associate Editor of AMLE.

Professor Piers Thompson (Nottingham Trent University) - Piers is a Professor of Local and Regional Economic Development at Nottingham Business School (NBS) within Nottingham Trent University. In NBS he holds the position of Director of Research Outputs with responsibility for providing a supportive environment for publishing and in assisting colleagues to develop skills for publishing in the most highly regarded journals. This role also includes preparing for research assessment activities, such as REF. He is also deputy lead for the Applied Economics and Policy Analysis (AEPA) research group, and was previously the Economics Department Research Coordinator. His own research focuses on how softer factors, such as culture, affect regional development and economic activities such as entrepreneurship. He has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Professor Cat Davies (University of Leeds) - Cat is the Dean for Research Culture at the University of Leeds. She leads the University in achieving a collegiate, inclusive, and ambitious research culture. In collaboration with a range of internal and external groups, she develops initiatives to ensure that our research operates with integrity and openness, and in a way that allows all members of the research community to thrive. Cat’s research expertise is in Language Development. Her projects investigate the interplay of children’s home and educational environments. She is currently focusing on the effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns on language and cognitive development and collaborates with a range of government and practitioner stakeholders to apply research findings to policy and practice.
