Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it? What elements of the degree inspired you to study it?
After completing my law degree at the University of Leeds, I chose to pursue an MSc in Management Consulting at Leeds to build on my legal background and gain a deeper understanding of business strategy. My law degree helped me develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills, but I wanted to acquire practical knowledge and expertise in consulting to pursue a career in the corporate sector.

The MSc modules, particularly those focused on strategic management and organisational change, closely aligned with my interests and career goals. The programme has enhanced my ability to address complex business challenges and improved my employability by equipping me with essential consulting skills, while allowing me to apply my legal knowledge in a business context.

What was the best part of your studies here? What did you enjoy the most about your course?
The best part of my studies was the combination of excellent facilities, engaging course content, and the supportive environment provided by both staff and peers. The University's strong reputation for research provided me with access to high-quality resources and up-to-date knowledge. The lecturers were not only knowledgeable but also approachable and encouraging, always ready to offer guidance and support.

The career centre was particularly helpful, assisting me in refining my CV and enhancing my employability through various workshops and resources. I also found the course content to be highly relevant, with modules that closely mirrored real-life business challenges, which deepened my understanding of consulting and management.

Outside of academics, the Leeds University Union offered a fantastic range of societies, such as the Women’s Basketball Club and the Malaysian Society, which allowed me to engage with a vibrant community and enjoy university life beyond the classroom.

What was your impression/experience of the student union, the city of Leeds and Yorkshire? Did you do any extracurricular activities during your studies? How did you enhance your personal development? What would you recommend to future students?
Leeds University Union was incredibly supportive, offering a wide range of services, from mental health support to part-time job opportunities. It made a real difference in my university experience by providing the resources and guidance needed for both academic and personal well-being.

Leeds itself is a vibrant, yet manageable city—lively enough to offer a great night out, but not overwhelming. It strikes the perfect balance between being dynamic and relaxed. I was actively involved in the Women’s Basketball Club, which provided not only a sense of community and fun but also opportunities for personal growth, including leadership development and teamwork.

I would highly recommend future students to take full advantage of everything the Leeds University Union has to offer—whether that’s joining clubs and societies or exploring the many social events available. Also, don’t miss the chance to explore Leeds and Yorkshire. The area offers a fantastic range of experiences, from the bustling city life to the stunning landscapes of the Peak District, making it easy to enjoy both academic and personal pursuits.

My experiences at Leeds University Business School significantly advanced my career by providing a solid foundation in consulting and preparing me for the workforce. The course content was directly aligned with the skills and knowledge needed in consulting, helping me to better understand the industry and refine my career path.

In addition, the support I received from both faculty staff and the career services team boosted my confidence and equipped me with valuable job-hunting strategies. I gained practical insights on how to present myself as a strong candidate, from CV refinement to interview techniques, which have been essential in helping me stand out in the competitive job market.

How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School? Have there been any notable highlights?
I started my first job at Consilio as a Junior Legal Technology Consultant, progressing to Consultant and then Senior Consultant within less than three years. My notable career highlight is achieving these advancements in a relatively short period, reflecting my dedication and expertise in the field. I am now transitioning to PwC as a Senior Associate to further my career in Legal Technology, where I aim to contribute to innovative projects and broaden my professional impact.

What are your ambitions for the future?
My ambition is to continue excelling in the legal technology sector, becoming a recognised expert in the field. I aim to stay at the forefront of innovation, contributing to transformative projects while advancing my career to positions of greater responsibility and influence.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to work in a similar role or industry to you?
Put yourself out there—network, socialise, and actively engage with others in the industry. Always remain humble and open to learning, taking on board advice and insights from those who came before you. Don’t hesitate to ask questions; curiosity is key. Never doubt your ability to break into the field or excel within it. Stay informed by researching, connecting with professionals, and keeping up with industry news and events. Persistence and a proactive attitude will take you far.

How was the transition to living and studying in a different country? Did the university offer support or services that you found helpful? Can you offer any advice?
Transitioning to living and studying in a different country is not easy- homesickness is normal, and it takes time to adjust. The University offers support, such as societies often run by students from your home country (in my case, the Malaysian & Singapore Society), which can provide a sense of belonging and community. My advice is to prioritise your mental health, reach out to others if you feel isolated, and remember that in a diverse city like Leeds, there’s always a piece of home to be found. Embrace the experience, and give yourself time to adapt.

What would you say is your defining memory of studying here? (For example, friendships made, confidence in your abilities, or any single event that you will always remember?) And would you recommend the Business School to others?
I have made lifelong friends through the course and societies, friendships that I will always treasure. Even though many of them are now scattered around the globe, we still keep in touch and stay connected, which is truly a blessing.

A defining moment for me was when my Professional Development Tutor, Andrea, reviewed my CV and encouraged me to be confident and never downplay my skills and abilities. I took this advice to heart, and it significantly boosted my confidence during interviews and in my consulting career, which can be quite daunting at times.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Business School. It provides numerous opportunities to advance your knowledge, with options to collaborate with companies and gain practical experience by working with an organisation as part of your dissertation. This blend of academic and real-world experience is invaluable.

What advice would you give to students to help them get the most out of their time in Leeds?
While studying is important, remember to look beyond academics! Enjoy everything Leeds has to offer- its vibrant nightlife, local shops, businesses, and the city’s unique charm. Your results matter, but they don’t define who you are. The experiences you gain during your time in Leeds, both inside and outside the classroom, will stay with you forever and shape your personal and professional growth. Make the most of every opportunity to explore, learn, and create memories.
