Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it? What elements of the degree inspired you to study it?
I chose the MSc International Business degree because I wanted to further develop a deeper understanding of the global marketplace and how businesses operate across borders, after my business undergraduate degree. The program’s focus on strategic management, international marketing, and cross-cultural communication really appealed to me as these are key areas that influence how brands and products succeed in different markets. I was particularly inspired by the opportunity to learn from global case studies and gain practical experience in a diverse business environment, which I had hoped would put me in the best possible position once I graduated and be invaluable in my future career as I had hoped to work with both international brands and partnerships.

What was the best part of your studies here? What did you enjoy the most about your course?
The best part of my studies at the University of Leeds was fully immersing myself in both academic study and extracurricular activities. I loved learning from tutors and lecturers who were experts in their fields, bringing real-world insights and knowledge into the classroom. Being appointed the International Business Course Representative gave me the chance to collaborate with peers and improve the student experience.

What was your impression/experience of the student union, the city of Leeds and Yorkshire? Did you do any extracurricular activities during your studies? How did you enhance your personal development? What would you recommend to future students?
During my time in Leeds, I was amazed by the city's vibrant nightlife, diverse restaurants, and variety of elite sports. With easy access to Leeds football, Yorkshire cricket, and Leeds Rhinos rugby, there’s always something exciting to experience. I also love modern art and sculpture too, so particularly enjoyed visiting the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which offers an inspiring escape. The city and surrounding area truly have something for everyone, from cultural attractions to outdoor activities. I also played for the University’s hockey team which allowed me to build strong connections and balance my studies with team activities, making the whole experience incredibly rewarding. Engaging in these extracurricular experiences, along with my studies, helped me develop both personally and professionally, and I would highly recommend future students embrace everything Leeds has to offer.

How did your experiences at Leeds University Business School help you to advance your career?
The course provided a strong foundation in key business areas, giving me the confidence to tackle unknown scenarios during my graduate scheme. With the solid knowledge and skills I gained, I felt prepared to succeed in complex situations, making it a brilliant springboard into my professional journey. The comprehensive curriculum, combined with practical insights, ensured I had the necessary tools to navigate the challenges ahead and thrive in my early career.

How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School? Have there been any notable highlights
Since leaving the Business School, my career has progressed rapidly, beginning with a unique graduate scheme ' Management Development Services ' that gave me hands-on experience across four different businesses, with real responsibilities in each role. This experience, along with an L5 Leadership and Management apprenticeship, developed my leadership skills and equipped me to navigate complex business environments. In my current role as Head of Innovation & Licensing at Iceland Foods, I have led the transformation of the Exclusive Brands division into a £350 million business. Recently, I was proud to be named a Global Rising Star by International Licensing, recognising my contributions to driving innovation and partnerships within the UK retail industry.

What are your ambitions for the future?
My ambitions for the future focus on continuing to drive innovation and growth in the retail and licensing sectors while challenging assumptions and the status quo within UK retail. I aim to expand the reach of Iceland Foods' exclusive brands through high-impact partnerships and new product development. I’m passionate about mentoring future leaders and promoting sustainable, customer-focused solutions. Ultimately, I want to help shape the future of the food and beverage industry by embracing emerging trends and technologies while fostering a culture of collaboration and forward-thinking strategies.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to work in a similar role or industry to you?
Be open to new experiences and constantly challenge assumptions. Seek out diverse opportunities to build a well-rounded skillset and don’t be afraid to take on responsibilities that push you outside your comfort zone. The ability to think creatively, collaborate effectively, and stay adaptable will set you apart. Most importantly, keep learning, stay curious, and embrace the ever-evolving nature of the industry to stay ahead of the curve.

What would you say is your defining memory of studying here? Would you recommend the Business School to others?
My defining memory was the personal growth I experienced, both academically and through extracurricular activities. Being appointed the International Business Course Representative and playing for the University hockey team allowed me to build lasting friendships and develop my leadership skills. The confidence I gained in navigating challenging situations and the opportunity to learn from the UK’s best tutors will stay with me throughout my career.

I would definitely recommend the Business School to others- its comprehensive approach, excellent staff, and diverse experiences provide a strong foundation for any aspiring business professional.

What advice would you give to students to help them get the most out of their time in Leeds?
I would advise immersing yourself in both academic and extracurricular activities. Take advantage of the opportunities to network with peers and professors, and don’t shy away from leadership roles, like becoming a course representative or joining societies. Explore the city, from its vibrant nightlife to cultural spots like the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and get involved in sports or other interests to balance your studies. Most importantly, be proactive, stay curious, and embrace every opportunity to learn and grow.
