The Professor Ian Beardwell Prize for CERIC researchers

Congratulations to Dr James Brooks, Professor Irena Grugulis and Dr Hugh Cook on being awarded the 2023 Professor Ian Beardwell Prize.

The prize was awarded to the CERIC researchers for their article, ‘Unlearning and consent in the UK Fire and Rescue Service’, published in Human Relations. This took place at the CIPD ARC Conference in January this year.

The prize-winning article draws on a detailed qualitative study of learning in the UK Fire and Rescue Service to challenge the clean slate approach and demonstrate that, not only did firefighters retain their old knowledge, they used it as a benchmark to assess new routines and practices.

The Professor Ian Beardwell Prize was set up in memory of leading HR academic Ian Beardwell, following his untimely death in 2002. Ian made a huge contribution to the study and practice of HR and helped link research and practice. The prize is given for the best-applied research paper and comes with a £1,000 award.
