Sally's current research interest is martial arts representational discourse. Her PhD evaluates the impact of British moving image advertising on film and television in Britain during the 1960s-1990s. The study identifies film techniques, technologies, genres, and production styles pioneered in advertising and analyses the way in which they have been adopted in film and television. The research comprises archival analysis of paper collections donated to the British Film Institute, textual analysis of selected commercials held at the National Film Archive, and analyses of other related holdings at the History of Advertising Trust.
As a member of the Hidden Screen Industries Network, Sally works with Professor Emily Caston (University of West London) and Patrick Russell (Senior Curator of Non-Fiction at the British Film Institute National Archive) to bring together researchers and curators in screen archive research. Her report ’Constructing Race in Advertising Archives; The ‘silent’ Chinese minority’ is to be published in Alphaville (Journal of Film and Screen Media). Sally has also published and acted as Co-editor for a Special Issue on ‘Advertising China’ for Journalism Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC).
