Sally has 30 years of experience as a marketing lecturer at various Business Schools in England including Manchester Metropolitan, Leeds Beckett, and Plymouth universities before joining Leeds in 2006. She was the winner of a Student Education Enhancement Award for Teaching Innovation in recognition of her excellence in learning and teaching within the Business School. Sally also devised the Water Bottle Brief to support the University’s #2023PlasticFree campaign which won a national award for the Best Campaign Supporting Sustainability.
Sally has extensive marketing experience as Marketing Research Consultant and is Trustee and Board Member of the History of Advertising Trust. She was Director of KAN-GAR-ROO Ltd - an ideas and design company - between 2012-2017 where she incorporated user research into educational furniture design and developed interdisciplinary workshops that enabled artists/designers to collaborate with marketers.
As Academic Staff Representative for LUBS Law Transformation Programme in 2019-2021, Sally was involved in various projects across the Faculty and University, including sustainability awareness campaigns, and communications for the new Esther Simpson building. Sally continued her sustainability commitment as University Staff Sustainability Architect and became one of seven certified Carbon Literacy Trainers at the Faculty committed to meeting the University’s net-zero carbon emission targets by 2030. Some of her achievements include the delivery of Carbon Literacy Training in 2021/22 which 80 staff and 600 students at the Faculty attended; organisation of LUBS’ first sustainability conference; and the recruitment of Student Sustainability Architects in student engagement activities. Sally was granted a University Recognition Award in March 2023 for her contributions.
As a member of LUBS’ Race Working Group and the University’s Student Success Forum, Sally is committed to decolonising the curriculum and enhancing the student experience through inclusive practices, regularly sharing these at Student Education Conferences. She is keen to support the creative industry’s diversity and inclusion agenda and has experience in using historical advertising archives to engage students in racialized discourse.

Sally's current research interest is martial arts representational discourse. Her PhD evaluates the impact of British moving image advertising on film and television in Britain during the 1960s-1990s. The study identifies film techniques, technologies, genres, and production styles pioneered in advertising and analyses the way in which they have been adopted in film and television. The research comprises archival analysis of paper collections donated to the British Film Institute, textual analysis of selected commercials held at the National Film Archive, and analyses of other related holdings at the History of Advertising Trust.
As a member of the Hidden Screen Industries Network, Sally works with Professor Emily Caston (University of West London) and Patrick Russell (Senior Curator of Non-Fiction at the British Film Institute National Archive) to bring together researchers and curators in screen archive research. Her report ’Constructing Race in Advertising Archives; The ‘silent’ Chinese minority’ is to be published in Alphaville (Journal of Film and Screen Media). Sally has also published and acted as Co-editor for a Special Issue on ‘Advertising China’ for Journalism Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC). She was also a reviewer for Westminster Papers in Communication and Culture’s special issue on ‘Advertising for the Human Good’. During lockdown, Sally contributed to ISOLATEDTalks to help creatives in isolation. She also contributed to PechaKucha Manchester's Migration event.
In terms of practice, Sally’s consultancy experience includes observational research for KM Furniture Ltd, Asda Stores Ltd, focus group research for Dutch company Unimeta BV (with the Design Support Centre), and Yorkshire Dance. Sally has considerable empathy for design and her ability to generate visual data for use by designers led to the development of an innovative 'user' research methodology that evaluated how young children interacted with furniture.

As Module Leader in Advertising for MA Advertising and Marketing / Design programmes, Sally has a track record of engaging with advertising agencies and creative professionals and organisations including TBWA\MCR, BKPL Productions, BBH London, Ear to the Ground, and Creative Resource. She also collaborated with the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) and History of Advertising Trust (HAT) to foster engagement between creative industries and Higher Education, as well as generating awareness in Prolific North. During lockdown, Sally joined The Drum, Canon, and the global creative community to support the Class of 2021 with a virtual artwork exhibition.
As Module Leader for Principles of Marketing, an undergraduate discovery module for non-marketing students, Sally regularly engages with speakers from industry such as IMDb and MCFC to enhance student learning. For the last 12 years, Sally was Head of Final Year for BA Business Management with Marketing programme where she introduced creative initiatives for finalists under her care. These included: Audience Rich Workshops with Leeds Arts University, Photoshop, and Digital Workshops, and agency-university collaboration via the annual Two+Two initiatives
For past 16 years, Sally was Module Leader in Company Marketing Projects for MSc International Marketing Management students where teams of students act as Marketing Consultants to businesses. Past clients have included BR Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Chain Bridge Honey Farm, Greencore Grocery Ltd, Crystal Maze Live Experience Ltd, and Leeds Kirkgate Market.
