Lighting Up Diwali 2025 with Culture, Colour and Community

Leeds University Business School came alive today with joyful performances, and the aroma of traditional Indian cuisine as students and staff gathered to celebrate Diwali.

Organised in collaboration with the JEL India and South Asia Business Centre, the event featured a rich tapestry of cultural activities including rangoli art, an ethnicwear fashion show, student and staff performances, and a world faith quiz. Attendees also enjoyed a delicious spread of traditional Indian food, bringing a taste of home to many international students.

Dr Meenakshi Sarkar, Lecturer at Leeds University Business School and module leader for Diversity Management, shared her personal connection to the event:

“I thoroughly enjoyed being in the UK experiencing a new culture. However, I often missed my family and friends back home mostly during celebrations like Holi, Navratri, Durga puja, and Diwali! Last year, I took the initiative to organise this celebration, and it was heartwarming to see over 250 students participate. This year, we’ve expanded the programme to include even more engaging activities. Events like these are vital for fostering inclusion and a sense of belonging among our diverse student and staff community.”

Professor (Mohammad) Faisal Ahammad, Head of the International Business Department and Director of the JEL India and South Asia Business Centre, echoed the sentiment:

It gives me immense pride to co-organise this celebration with LUBS. Diwali is not just a festival, it’s a symbol of unity, light and hope. Special thanks to Meenakshi, Amrita and the entire team for making this event truly memorable.

The celebration was a testament to the Business Schools commitment to diversity, inclusion, and global community building.

Wishing everyone who is celabrating a very happy and prosperous Diwali.
