Description
Research culture is shaped not only by established academics but also by emerging researchers who are forming their professional identities and leadership approaches. However, there is a significant gap in how we prepare doctoral researchers for their future roles as research leaders and culture-shapers.
While postgraduate researchers (PGRs) develop deep expertise in their research domains, they typically have limited opportunities to develop the leadership capabilities and inclusive practices they will need as Principal Investigators (PI).
This represents a missed opportunity: the doctoral stage is a formative period when researchers are actively constructing their understanding of what good research leadership looks like and how research communities should function.
Research overview
We will design workshops on building inclusive PI leadership and grant success. These workshops will bring together PGRs and early-career researchers (ECRs) to equip them with essential knowledge and skills for future leadership in research.
Through a series of expert talks, participants will gain practical insights into research funding, grant writing, and inclusive leadership practices - all critical components for academic careers.
These workshops consist of several interactive sessions designed to develop a holistic understanding of the research landscape.
Themes include:
1 - Research Impact, PI Leadership, and Research Culture
An introductory session exploring why grant writing and PI leadership training matter for PGRs' future careers. This talk will contextualise the importance of understanding research culture, institutional priorities, and the evolving expectations of research leaders.
2 - Funding Landscape and Opportunities for PGRs and ECRs
A practical session on current funding opportunities, from early-career grants to larger scheme eligibility. Participants will learn how to navigate the funding landscape, identify opportunities suited to their career stage, and understand what funders are looking for.
3 – Inclusive PI Leadership
An exploration of what effective, inclusive leadership looks like in research settings. This session will cover practical management approaches, team-building, mentorship, and strategies for fostering inclusive research environments which are increasingly valued by funders and institutions alike.
