Profile

I am an economist who specialises in economic policy and sustainability.

I currently work in the Yorkshire and Humber Policy Engagement Research Network (Y-PERN), which is a partnership between all the local authorities and all of the universities in Yorkshire to collaborate with policy-relevant academic research. My role involves being part-time seconded to West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), where I am assisting in creating the West Yorkshire Local Growth Plan. I am also a member of the West Yorkshire Economic Development Group – an advisory forum focused on economic development policy and strategy, and which brings together representatives from Higher Education and the West Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, as well as being Chair of Y-PERN’s West Yorkshire Academic Steering Group. My leadership in this area has been recognised by the Mayor of West Yorkshire and by Yorkshire Universities, among others.

My PhD studies on the political economy of the railways was motivated by my interest in the economics of sustainability. This led to a number of academic journal articles, and my book Derailed: How to Fix Britain’s Broken Railways.

I have considerable research experience working with interdisciplinary teams of social and natural scientists, and a strong publication record in CABS 3* publications. I am a specialist in achieving research impact, and have been highly successful in attracting research funding, and have successfully led research projects as Principal Investigator.

I have extensive media experience, including appearances on BBC Newsnight, the BBC News ChannelSky NewsTalk TVChannel 4, and Channel 5, in major newspapers and magazines internationally, and on a range of national local radio stations, including BBC Radio 4 and LBC. I am also a columnist for The Guardian.

I am also experienced in higher education teaching in economics and politics, as well as in economics PhD supervision, being an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Throughout my academic career I have committed to conducting research which is useful for creating positive social and economic change.
