Profile
Sania’s research focuses on macro-finance, applied and climate econometrics, energy and environmental economics, the economics of commodity markets and financial markets, and climate finance, with a strong emphasis on quantitative modelling and empirical analysis. She is particularly interested in market dynamics and efficiency of various energy and commodity, green bonds, and green equity markets. She’s also interested in the economics of systems thinking and financial systems and recently started working on climate econometrics.
Sania is also a researcher at the New Capital Consensus (NCC), a coalition of Chatham House Sustainability Accelerators, Financial Systems Thinking Innovation Centre, the University of Leeds, and Radix Big Tent. NCC research particularly uses a systems thinking approach to understand the current UK financial system, its flows, stocks, and their interrelationships to assist in the system-wide change required towards a sustainable economy and tackling structural inequalities. Recently, she has also completed an industry internship under the UK Centre for Greening Finance and Investments (CGFI) and Building Societies Association (BSA), funded by UKRI (NERC), on enhancing climate risk awareness in the mortgage sector by examining the impacts of flooding and overheating through narrative-driven approaches.
Before joining LUBS, she worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Essex and as a Lecturer in Finance at BRAC University, Bangladesh. Sania had formerly worked as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and as a Research Assistant at Massey University, New Zealand. She also has experience in the financial industry with institutions such as Barclays Wealth, Barclays Capital, Lloyds Banking Group, HSBC and IDLC Plc). She was awarded her PhD in Economics from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and Curtin University, Western Australia and her MSc in Financial Forecasting and Investment from the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
Sania is a member of several distinguished associations, including the Royal Economic Society (RES), the Econometric Society (ES), Climate Econometrics Network, the European Economic Association (EEA), the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE), and the Italian Econometric Association.
