Dr Richard M Crossley

Profile

Richard’s primary research and supervision interests include market-based accounting research, social, environmental and sustainable practices, SMEs, and qualitative methodological approaches. Interests also extend to AI pedagogy initiatives. He brings extensive experience in professional accounting to his research and teaching, having worked in a variety of financial and management accounting roles across major insurance and manufacturing organisations. His work has appeared in Business Strategy and the Environment, the Journal of International Accounting, Auditing and Taxation and the International Journal of Accounting & Information Management.

He joined Leeds University Business School in November 2019 after spending nearly fifteen years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, where he received his PhD in Accounting, with an emphasis on legitimation effects on social and environmental practices. He also holds an MSc in Risk, Disaster and Environmental Management, a PGCert in Higher Education Practice, and a BA in Law and Accountancy. He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accounts (FCCA) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His career began as a professional footballer in the UK, Hong Kong and China.

PhD Supervision

Richard is available to jointly supervise Doctoral Candidates in ESG-related areas including sustainability in accounting and accounting education.

Activities

Richard is our Director of Student Education and is the module leader for LUBS3650 Critical Cases in Accounting and Finance. His teaching portfolio covers a myriad of undergraduate disciplines, from Intermediate Financial Accounting to Introductory Management Accounting. His postgraduate teaching has ranged from Dissertation supervision to Financial Reporting and Analysis to CSR, Accountability and Reporting. He has also experience in teaching professional accounting and legal subject areas as well as delivering accounting-related courses for external businesses, incorporating data analytics. He also works as an undergraduate Academic Personal tutor and Placement Supervisor. As a certified Chartered Accountant, he was an ACCA Marker for twelve years.

Awards and honours

Richard has twice received the Contributions Awards under the University Recognition Scheme for outstanding contributions to the department and the University of Leeds community (2022, 2024).
