(Full time) 2019 start
Business Analytics BSc
Overview
This course prepares you for an exciting career addressing business and policy challenges in a quantitative, evidence based way. We’re one of the first Russell Group universities to offer this subject at undergraduate level.
You will acquire skills, knowledge and experience in the use of statistical and analytical techniques to support evidence-based decision making. You’ll study data analysis with practical and theoretical aspects of decision making and the fundamental business disciplines of management and economics. In addition, you can tailor your degree to your own interests through your choice of optional modules on topics such as sports analytics, business economics and marketing.
Demand for experts in business analytics is growing rapidly, and the University of Leeds is at the forefront of developments in this area. Informed by the internationally recognised research in our Centre for Decision Research, much of which is applied, this course will give you the in-depth knowledge and skills to thrive in a fast-growing sector.
Course content
Our degrees have a modular structure. This means that compulsory modules provide you with the core knowledge and skills that you need, while optional and discovery modules allow you to shape your course to suit your personal interests and career aspirations.
Compulsory modules in Year 1 will give you a broad knowledge and skills base covering analytics and management. You’ll be introduced to economic theory and organisational behaviour to put the role of analytics in the context of the business environment, as well as exploring some of the key methods and techniques used in analytics. An optional module will also allow you to explore topics such as sports analytics, marketing or further economics.
In the following year you’ll build on this with compulsory modules in analytical methods, evidence based consultancy and management decision making, all led by the internationally recognised Centre for Decision Research, along with further work on economics. You can also choose from optional modules on marketing, operations and supply chain management, information management and topics in economics.
You’ll apply your skills to a major analytics project in your final year, working alongside an academic supervisor. You’ll also gain more advanced knowledge of strategic management and decision-making methods, and select from further optional modules on topics such as leadership, international marketing and advertising, and people analytics among others.
Course structure
The list shown below represents typical modules/components studied and may change from time to time. Read more in our terms and conditions.
Learning and teaching
You’ll be taught using a range of methods including lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. The rest of your time will be spent in independent learning, which allows you to develop your skills in research and analysis. Our Virtual Learning Environment will help to support your studies: it’s a central place where you can find all the information and resources for the School, your programme and modules.
You’ll also benefit from dedicated academic counselling from your Head of Year, a lecturer in your subject area who will meet you individually during the year and act as a personal tutor.
On this course, you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.
