In 2016, Gary was one of the young people who undertook a funded internship in China through Generation UK. Launched in 2013, the Generation UK aims to , boost employability, enhance  job prospects and help students to develop a global mindset. Generation UK is also committed to supporting  social mobility & widening participation.

Gary credits the skills, experience and confidence he gained from the programme with helping him to start his career at leading companies including LinkedIn. Being born to Nigerian parents who migrated to the UK and growing up in a single-parent low-income household, he is also keenly aware of the factors that make this kind of opportunity less accessible to some.

As Outward Mobility Manager for British Council China Gary is now responsible for providing opportunities for young people from all backgrounds to spend time working or studying in China through Generation UK.

Last year he launched Climbing the Rungs, a social mobility podcast that aims to inspire young people from less privileged backgrounds to achieve career success and raise awareness of issues related to socio-economic background.
