Jane Featherstone was behind the multi-award winning Broadchurch, a relatively rare example of ‘water cooler’ television at a time when viewers don’t typically sit down to watch the same programme at the same time each week.
In conversation with Professor Bethany Kleine, Head of the School of Media and Communication, Jane will talk about her career in television, her commitment to nurturing new writing and directing talent and share her thoughts on the future of the TV drama in both Britain and internationally.

About the speaker
Jane Featherstone founded Sister Pictures in November 2015 as an independent television production company specialising in authored, bold and distinctive stories for UK and international audiences.
Sister’s current projects include The Split by Abi Morgan for BBC 1/Sundance, Clean Break by Mark Marlow, starring Sheridan Smith for ITV, Giri Haji by Joe Barton for Netflix/BBC 1, and Chernobyl by Craig Mazin for HBO. Amongst its development slate is the major contemporary novel, The Power by award-winning writer Naomi Alderman and Pandora by Sam Vincent and Jon Brackley for AMC. In addition, Naomi de Pear’s in-house label, Hootenanny is producing Flowers by Will Sharpe, and The Bisexual, created by and starring Desiree Akhavan, both for Channel 4.
Before setting up Sister Pictures Jane was Chief Executive of Kudos for 15 years and Co-Chairman of Shine UK. At Kudos she executive produced many innovative and groundbreaking series dramas in the UK and internationally, including the multi award-winning BBC1 hit Spooks; era-defining Life on Mars for BBC1, The Hour for BBC2, Utopia and Humans for Channel 4, The Tunnel for Sky Atlantic/Canal Plus and the highly successful and multi-award winning Broadchurch (ITV1).
Jane believes in nurturing new writing and directing talent alongside her relationships with established practitioners, as shown in the current slate which has 4 projects by new authors. She is a passionate believer in equal opportunities and endeavours to give access to creating work to as many different voices as possible.
She was made a Fellow of the Royal Television Society in 2011 and in 2007 received the Contribution to the Medium Award at the Women in Film and TV awards. Jane is a trustee of the arts charity, the Freelands Foundation.
